John Cowsill was a member of Jan and Dean's back up band, The Bel Air Bandits, for a good part of the 1980's. This included a trip to China where they were the first American Rock band to play there. John Denver was big in China at the time and John Cowsill did a phenomenal version of Country Roads on that tour.
