The Cowsills, nine-member musical family, came to Cleveland this week, subjects of one of the largest promotional buildups in the history of MGM Reords.
MGM has been telling everyone in the music business how talented and great this group really is. Now the big record company had to prove it - to Cleveland's pop music experts anyway.
Showdown was in the Commerce Room of the Theatrical Restaurant, with MGM and Main Line Cleveland Inc. sponsoring a gigantic press party. Emcee for the night's festivities was Louis Newman, Main Line employee who promotes the MGM line in Cleveland.
Sons Bill, 19; Bob, 18; Barry, 13, and John, 11, are the nucleus of the Cowsills. Their mother, Barbara, also sings, along with eight-year-old daughter Susan. Sons Dick and Paul are the road managers and equipment technicians, and father, Bud, coordinates and manages the classy group.
The Cowsills opened strong with their current hit, "The Rain, the Park and Other Things," and finished 14 tunes and one hour later even stronger with their hit again.
In between their smash record, the group showed versatility by playing numereous instruments, singing three Beatles songs, two Motown songs, two rhythm and blues tunes, two folk songs, two standard pop hits and three original numbers from their MGM album. They were great on every tune.
Following are other critics reviews:
Hal (Baby) Moore, WHK music director, "Fantastic. It's easy to see why their record is the most requested at WHK."
Dick Weber, music director of WKYC, "Possibly the best new group of the year. A fresh sound that can't miss."
Eric Stevens, WIXY music director, "They are even better in person than they are on their album - and their LP is slightly great."
Mike Payne, program director for WABQ, "Out of sight. They can make it big in pop music, rhythm and blues, folk music, good music or any other kind of music."
The Cowsills might have a slight flaw, but I certainly couldn't find it. See if you can, they will be on the Ed Sullivan Show Oct. 29.
