The Smithereens, known for the hits "Blood and Roses," "Only a Memory" and "A Girl Like You" that hit MTV and college radio in the '80s and '90s, will perform those songs as well as deep cuts during the band's three-night residency, Aug. 6-9, at the Egyptian Theatre.
"We do make a set list, but I let our drummer Dennis Diken do it," said guitarist Jim Babjak, who co-founded the band with Diken. "I just tell him to let me know what to play."

"For these particular shows in Park City, we have John Cowsill of the Cowsills," Babjak said.

Cowsill, who sings with his family's group, the Cowsills, met The Smithereens in 1990, Babjak said.
"We were recording an album in Los Angeles, and on a night off, Dennis and I went to see the Cowsills, who were opening for Screaming Trees and Redd Kross," Babjak said. "The Cowsills' vocals were so great, and I could hear them singing background harmonies on a song I had just written called 'Now and Then.' "
After the show, Babjak and Diken went backstage to meet the family.
"We approached John and his sister Susan about singing on the song," Babjak said. "Susan didn't believe I was in The Smithereens. So I told her to call the studio, show up and we'd pay her."
The next day, the whole family showed up and recorded its part.
“"hey knocked it out so quickly," Babjak said. "So playing 'Now and Then' now with John, who sang on the original, is so special. He was the drummer for the Beach Boys for 25 years, and he called us and said if Marshall and Robin aren't available, he could step in."
