Cowsills: Sneak-Peek Backstage! Spring 1969 16 SPEC
IT'S ALWAYS FUN-TIME with the Cowisills! And if you need proof that they are just as lovable and adorable behind the scenes as they are on camera - then come along for a sneak-peek backstage as the Cowsill Clan rehearses for It's Happening and their very own TV spec, A Family Thing!
Surprize!! Barry, the birthday boy, didn't know that the staff of It's Happening knew it was his 14th birthday and went out to get a cake for him. Last year the family suprised Barry on stage in the middle of the show. They stopped singing and the audience joined them in a chorus of "Happy Birthday, Barry!"
No! Johnny doesn't really run around without his pants, like he did on the TV spec. But, yes - John is absent-minded at times!
| |
Sweetie-pie Sue has a heart-to-heart conversation with guest host Buddy Ebsen - and then they do a soft-shoe number together. Needless to say, Susie captured hearts from coast-to-coast by just being herself!
First stop - the make-up room. No - they're not trying to improve on mother nature! All Cowsills were born beautiful - they just have to cover a few freckles for the TV cameras!
| |
All made up and every hair in place - Johnny runs through his solo number, The Path Of Love. When John takes the mike, Barry fills in on the drums and Susie plays bass guitar!
Sure hope you were at attention and watched and listened carefully to the Cowsills' NBC-TV spec this past November. If you did - you learned a lot of the family secrets!
| |
For instance - Barry really doesn't like to wear ties! And the older guys do help the younger boys with everything from getting dressed to advice about girls!
During the rehearsal, the show's Assistant Director filled in for the St. Bernard dog and climbed into the bathtub - as Susie, Barry and John sang The Happiness Song. The "real" dog was there for the show, though!
Here, Bob and Bill explain how the whole family once lived in a three-room apartment in New York City and how they wrote the group's early hit, In Need Of A Friend. That was a true story!
| |
One of the most beautiful and touching moments in the show was when Susie (with real tears in her eyes) dedicated a song to their brother Dick in Viet Nam - and then joined the rest of the family to sing What The World Needs Now - Is Love.
And - the Cowsills share all of their love with everyone! That's what makes them such a delightful, wonderful family! If you want to see them with their very own weekly TV show - write to NBC-TV, Program Director, Hollywood, Calif., and tell them so!
