The Cowsills were a part of the 31th annual Happy Together Tour. The Cowsills joined Flo and Eddie of The Turtles, The Association, The Grass Roots, Mark Lindsay, and The Buckinghams. Rehearsal was a two-day gig in in Atlanta, Georgia before hitting the road.
Susan summed up the tour with the following post on September 5: "Tonight marks the ending of 2015 Happy Together Tour! What an amazing journey we have been on! I watched my brothers dreams come true.. Bucket lists marked off and credit where credit has been long over due, paid to them by fans and colleagues alike! Thank you to all the powers that be both seen and unseen but all felt, with so much love and rewards!
Thank you to Mark and Howard, our fearless and hilariously reckless abandonmented ( yeah I made that up!!) bossanovas!

Here's the story of how the C's got on the tour, in their own words, as told at the Clearwater, Florida show.
Bob: And we started – as a threesome - calling each other having what we would call a “Why aren’t we on a Happy Together Tour?” phone conversations, trying to figure this out.
Paul: (can’t understand ), that’s why.
Bob: We thought, “Number of hit records?” And then we tossed them all up there, everyone on the tour, number of hits and then we threw ours up there, looked back. OK, as much as some, more than others, so we’re OK there. And that’s good news because if you can’t pass the music test, you’re not going to be on the Happy Together Tour.
Susan: No, you shouldn’t.
Paul: True
Bob: So we pass that. Then we thought, "If it’s not that, why aren’t we?" So then we thought “Bus chemistry. It’s got to be bus chemistry." We’re a family . . .
Susan: Who wants that.
Bob: . . . and family members do things to each other that you’d never do to somebody else. And maybe they thought that would spill into the bus and screw up the bus chemistry. Then, in 2013, Paul brought up a very interesting thing when he started checking Susan out going, “There’s never been a band with a girl in it on the Happy Together Tour."
Paul: That’s why we’re not getting opportunities.
Bob: We didn’t talk to her for two months.
Susan: And I’m thinking, "That’s why they SHOULD." I’m just SAYING!!
Bob: Then Susan came up ….
Susan: I was wondering and I said to these guys, I said “Maybe they saw the documentary and they think we’re really f***** up. And they just don’t want to have that anywhere near them.”
Bob: But you know documentaries. You have to tell the truth and everything, so …
Susan: I thought that was pretty feasible.
Bob: Don’t book them. They are going to take that tour down for sure.
Paul: I thought Howard and Mark ran into my Dad and actually …..
Bob: Last year we did find out - well we figured it out without even being told ….
Susan: Paul actually figured it out. He’s a genius.
Paul: I went online and I’m looking and looking and looking at all the pictures of everybody, and everybody is looking great and then I told Bob and Susan (Susan: Genius), “We aren’t old enough.”
Bob: So this year, the phone rings, …
Susan: We’re old enough!
Bob: … the phone rings, I answer, and “Bob, this is Mark Volman from The Turtles.” He could have said, “Bob, this is God,” at this point because I’ve been waiting five years for the call. He doesn’t know it, you know. And man that started that and here we are. And we are so happy!
Band backing all performers (each was really EXCELLENT in my opinion):
Godfrey Townsend - guitar
Greg Smith - bass
Manny Focarazzo - keyboards
Steve Murphy - drums
Tour Facts:
Mark Dawson did a wrap-up of the tour on his show Making Noise With Mark Dawson on 9/10/15 from Orlando, Florida.
Tour facts:
1. 30,203 miles traveled (starting in Biloxi, Mississippi and ended in Essex Junction, Vermont)
2. 549.2 hours on the road (equivalent of 22 days)
3. Most shows done on any Happy Together Tour
4. 47 shows in 46 days
5. 23 states and 1 providence in Canada
6. 5 airlines, 3 car rental agencies, 1 equipment truck and 4 buses
7. 5 blown tires and 1 near accident
8. 3 hour Canadian border crossing delay
9. Colds passed all around, but not one show cancelled
Specific Cowsill stories Mark told:
1. One un-named casino had produced their own promo posters and it featured The Cowsmells and the Bunkinghams. Oooops casino
2. Susan will be a guest on Mark’s show in the near future
3. When rehearsals started in Biloxi, Mark Lindsay-Mark Dawson-Mark Volman were sitting in the audience chatting as the Cowsills took the stage to rehearse. They started “She ask him why?” and the three Marks went “What???!!!!!” To quote Mark, “They killed it.” They are great. (Sounds like the C’s gained some peer respect on this tour!!)
Susan was a guest on Mark's radio show Making Noise with Mark Dawson on September 24, 2015. The following are my notes from the show.
When Mark ask Susan if there was a show during the Happy Together Tour that stuck out in her mind (memorable I think was Mark’s term), she answered the State Fair in Indiana (Indianapolis). She said this was probably because they had played there before when they were kids and it was a déjà vu kind of thing. She said that generally she liked the outside/fair shows best because they were outside, bigger crowds, grandstand thing where you could see the people in the audience and the audience was generally in a more festive mood. Another story from this show was that when they did the “She ask him why” line and the crowd roared. Susan looked over at Bob and Bob had tears in his eyes. She said she knew that they “mattered” then. (BTW at this point Mark interjected that the “She ask me why..” always was a show stopper moment in each show.)
Susan said that they really didn’t expect to be respected/liked as much as they found they were.
When Mark ask who was the best singer on the tour (ask numerous ways while Susan dodged the question), Susan answered “That would be Mark of 20 questions.”
Mark SOLD Susan for $25 in New Hampshire (in the end the guy donated the money to charity). hee hee
When ask how she got Adam Durst to sing on “Palm Of My Hand,” Susan explained that Adam was a Continental Drifters fan and one of only about 20 people who sat out in the rain at Jazzfest one year to hear them perform. When writing the song she said she heard Adam singing that part in her head, so she just called him up and ask. He said, “Yes!”
There was talk about them using their phones/cameras on stage. Susan said she was impressed that as the finale was going on, Mark would already have posted pics on Facebook.
There were a number of fan questions about Susan’s bike. Here are some of her answers:
Susan had asked the “bosses” about getting a bike (this was not her bike from home). One said yes (Howard) and one said, “Absolutely NO!” (Mark) Guess who won? So once she had the bike she approached the road manager, Ron, about riding it on stage. He was against the idea. Guess who won? Mark Dawson thought the first show she rode in was the Wisconsin State Fair in West Allis, Wisconsin (August 9th).
The bike has a name and it’s “Sky Blue.” She was going to paint it, but never got around to it. Susan joked that maybe the reason for the delay at the Canadian border was because Sky Blue had a ‘prior’ hee hee
The bike is currently at the road manager’s (Ron) house.
How many miles did she ride on the tour on the bike? More than 100, less than 1,000 was the best guess.
When ask what was the coolest thing she found on a bike ride, Susan said that in (after some discussion they said Elkhart, Indiana but I don’t see that on the schedule) Indiana the show was sort of on a state park and she took her lunch in her backpack and rode to a creek. There was a bridge over the creek and she stopped and had her lunch there.
Susan said the bike was important because it gave her a respite from the tiredness that comes from so many miles of travel and “I’m still 7-years-old.” She said as kids she took along toys she could carry but always wanted a bike on those tours.
When ask if she planned to change the pom-poms for each season of the year, Susan reminded us she doesn’t have the bicycle (at Ron’s house) but wouldn’t change them anyway. The pom-poms and a personalized tag of “Susan Happy Together Tour” were given to her by the sound guy, J.C. and would always be prominent on the bike. She was asked about adding a flowery basket, but Susan said “I’m not the flowery basket type.” Also said she wasn’t the metal basket type either. She said she did have a basket on it for a little while that she borrowed from one of her brothers, but it didn’t last long.
Mark told her about all the comments about her and posts and she said, “I felt like I’m famous. It’s weird.”
Susan said the tour was like going to camp which was something she’d never gotten to do as a child.
Mark said it would be “my honor” to be a part of any future projects Susan did. He said he was so happy to have gotten to know Susan and that she was so easy to get to know. He said she had “boundless energy” and was “100% genuine.” He said it was rare to have performers who get the music / people thing and that Susan did “that to the fullest.”
Mark asks all his guest stars 15 questions:
1. Boxers or briefs Susan: Boxers
2. Superman or Spiderman Susan: Superman
3. Sunsets or Sun rises Susan: Sunsets
4. American Idol or American Bandstand Susan: American Bandstand
5. Transformers or Hot Wheels Susan: Hot Wheels
6. Carol King or Carly Simon Susan Carly Simon (this one surprised me) She said “what about Carol Simon” hee hee
7. Kittens or Puppies Susan: (after going back and forth a few times) Kittens
8. Apartment or Loft Susan: Loft
9. VHS or Betamax Susan: Betamax
10. Yoko Ono or Joan Rivers Susan: Joan Rivers
11. Sippy Cups or Juicy Boxes Susan: Sippy Cups
12. Pop Tarts or Hot Pockets Susan: Pop Tarts
13. Sonnet or Haiku Susan: Haiku
14. Clowns or Mimes Susan: Mimes
15. Rainbows or Unicorns Susan: Rainbows “hands down”
Finally Susan had one question for Mark. “What conditioner do you use on your hair?” Mark wouldn’t answer hee hee

By far, The Cowsills gave the best performance of the evening. (that was the overwhelming consensus from the 10+ people we talked to right after the concert)
The Cowsills sounded exactly the same as their records with tight vocals and excellent harmonies. We wish they'd pick something else to replace Indian Lake, though; That was never a great song.
We really enjoyed all the performances. Most received standing ovations. Overall, such a fun concert! We'd see it again.
Favorite moment: Cowsills singing 'Hair'.

I enjoyed the show, the theatre was packed, amazing that these guys can still perform at such a high level considering their age, my age or older.
They used the same musicians throughout the show, I was wondering before the show how they would do this, but it worked really well. Every group performed 3 or 4 of their biggest hits, and they all sounded original to an extent, in my opinion the Cowsills sounded the most like I remember.

The Happy Together Tour was absolutely fantastic! I went because I love the music from the 60's, but not really expecting too much, and boy was I wrong because the acts on this tour gave a fabulous show! Each group was better than the last. These guys and girls can still sing their songs from 40 years ago!! I have to especially say how great the Cowsills were! I have always loved that group and now after seeing them live I love them even more!! I would highly recommend the Happy Together Tour. You won't regret going!
Favorite moment: When all the acts came out at the end & sang their songs together, just amazing!

We always love this concert, in which the Turtles bring various groups from the 60s and 70s to Humphreys. It is so much fun to hear songs where I know every word. Most of the artists were still really great, especially - to my surprise - the Cowsills.

The show was fantastic from the first note. Every song was pure hit, wonderfully performed. The entertainers were very into the show (no putting in an appearance) and the crowd followed suit. Susan Cowsill stole the show appearing during the Buckinhams "Susan" and joining the Association with some harmony, besides her own family segment.
Favorite moment: The Cowsills - loved seeing them so enjoying themselves.

Far too much talk and far too little singing. With the exception of the Cowsills, who can still hit all the notes -- and did--, the rest of the bands' members could use a little practice.

Hubby and I just got back from the HTT at the Chumash Casino. All I can say is wow.....and wow! It was a great time! Of course the main draw for me was the Cowsills and they did not disappoint. All of the other groups were good, and we enjoyed them very much. It was a smaller than usual venue there since they are doing a lot of renovations at the casino. All of the groups did three songs each - because they want people to go and gamble afterwards, but that's not our thing. After the concert, Bob and Susan were hanging out and talking to people they knew. Paul came out very briefly, but then went back to the backstage area. I got Bob's autograph, and Susan's, too - even though I already have her autograph from last years house concert "tour" with her and Russ - you can never get enough autographs from any of them smile emoticon .

Had an amazing time at Asbury Park last night... Beautiful weather, great tunes, amazing beach.
The Cowsills were spot-on awesome... So great to see them in person again.
I know they often do a "meet and greet" in the lobby after the show, and I had wanted to tell them how I saw them in Stony Brook NY ( Dogwood Hollow) in 67 or 68 (I got Sue's autograph) how much their music meant to me at the time (had all albums up to Captain Sad), and how "Family Band" touched me and rekindled so many great musical memories.

The Cowsills. The inspiration for TV's "The Partridge Family." They rose to fame as a family band of five brothers, a little sister and a mom...with several top 10 hits..."Hair," "The Rain, The Park and Other Things (Flower Girl)" plus the theme song from "Love, American Style" and "Indian Lake" just to name a few. They came out for a meet and greet after the show tonight and gave their fans all the time they wanted. They were the tightest band of the evening and the band that got some of the best audience response; their vocal harmonies were amazing. Plenty of autographs and photos for anyone that wanted to meet them. Yes, I've been a big Cowsills fan for years and it was a thrill to meet Bob, Paul and Susan in person and chat with them. By the way, their brother John has been the drummer for the Beach Boys for several years so he did not play tonight. An incredibly talented family of musicians. A very fun night for me...

"The Cowsills were, in my opinion, the best of the performers and probably sing better live than any act I've ever seen in concert"

It's awesome. We see it every year and the addition of the Cowsills made it 100 times better.

I would love to see them play an extended set in a club setting outside of The Happy Together tour. With due respect to all of the acts, The Cowsills bested everyone.

OMG the Happy Together Tour last night at the Paramount Theater in Aurora, IL was unbelievable! Of course The Cowsill's outdid themselves as always. They were and are amazing. I have to say the whole show was excellent, each group was awesome. The Association's harmonies were impeccable!!! SO good! Backup band phenomenal. I think my favorite concert ever! Now waiting for the new Cowsill's album and hopefully a tour??? Thank you Susan, Paul and Bob for being so gracious, never mind talented, you sure are something.

I stayed put in my seat at intermission, right on the aisle, and I heard people talking as they headed out to the lobby. I heard "Cowsills" name dropping repeatedly. They couldn't all have been hardcore Hairheads like me, so I think it is safe to say they made an impression on the audience.

I thought the Cowsills were the best quality of the groups. Association songs were better than the last time. Wonderful show. Glad we made the trip.
From the Philly Inquirer:
The Happy Together Tour that sold out the Keswick Theatre Wednesday might seem stuck in the American flower-power '60s. And it was. Gleefully. Flo & Eddie of the Turtles (whose 1967 hit lent this showcase its name), The Buckinghams, The Association, The Grass Roots, The Cowsills, and Mark Lindsay (from Paul Revere and the Raiders) rippled through sunshiny harmonies, dewy rhythms, and lilting melodies.
But beneath those lovely surfaces were depths of darker loveliness. The bubblegum psychedelia of the Summers of Love was but the prettier harmonic sister to weightier, inward-looking '60s jams from Dylan or Hendrix. This was the rainbow tonality of optimism and unity, not rancor and protest. Each song was elegantly executed, every high note hit, without a hint of creakiness. Not a single act was a one-hit-wonder; each tight set was packed with tunes familiar to 60s AM radio fanatics.
Between tunes, Buckinghams originals Carl Giammarese and Nick Fortuna reminisced about wearing Edwardian suits and mop-tops. On hits like "Kind of a Drag," they also riffed through epic chord changes and Californian beachy harmonies - and they're also Italian guys from Chicago, so there was that swagger.
The showstoppers were brothers-sister act The Cowsills - the inspiration for The Partridge Family. They were oddly feisty and harmonically rich. Cowsill siblings Susan, Paul, and Bob leapt into the fluffy chamber pop of "The Rain, the Park and the Other Things" and the tangy theme to television's Love, American Style with weird, jittery panache. Best act all evening.
The Grass Roots were great - Motown-inflected rock with a tribal, thumping edge, but they lost points by not having original members performing the charge of "Midnight Confessions" and other tunes. Lindsay was solidly soul-rocking on rousing hits like "Kicks."
Yet, along with the Cowsills, best of show was The Association and The Turtles. Dapper in white suits, sounding equally angelic, original Association members Jim Yester, Jules Alexander, and Del Ramos let loose with soft, high three-part harmonies on "Never My Love" (which still strikes the ear as radically sophisticated) "Windy," and "Cherish." The Turtles' Flo & Eddie - legendary goofballs - dressed like chickens, wordlessly harmonized through Frank Zappa's "Peaches En Regalia" (the duo belonged to the Mothers of Invention for a time), and crafted complex harmonic structures for Turtles smashes such as "Elenore" and "Happy Together," the night's dreamy theme song.
From The Examiner:
This year’s Happy Together Tour stars stalwarts The Buckinghams, The Association, The Grass Roots and Mark Lindsay in addition to the hosts The Turtles featuring Flo & Eddie. But it was newcomers The Cowsills who practically stole the show Sunday night at the Tarrytown Music Hall in Tarrytown, N.Y.
Even with just a five-song set (“The Rain, the Park & Other Things," “We Can Fly,” “Love American Style,” “Indian Lake” and “Hair”), Bob, Paul and Susan Cowsill were as vocally exquisite as they were in April at their full show at New York’s Cutting Room, prompting Turtle Howard Kaylan to predict a major career comeback for the 1960s pop vocal group, who are also very funny, all things considered.
After all, as Bob noted, what were once nine in the Cowsills family is now tragically down to four (John Cowsill is drummer for the Beaach Boys), this prompting Paul to feign a crying jag. He also noted facetiously how cool the Cowsills were prior to performing “We Can Fly”—since both Al Hirt and Lawrence Welk covered it. They also sang “Love American Style,” “Indian Lake” and their big hit “Hair,” and noted how honored they were to finally be on the Happy Together Tour—having first tried to join it five years ago.
“They said we had to be 65!” said Paul. “Well, Bob turned 65 this year!” And in becoming part of Happy Together, Susan Cowsill is the first female Happy Together Tour-ist since Spanky McFarlane back in the mid-'80s.
The rest of the show filled out a perfect cross-section of ‘60s pop and rock starting with The Buckinghams, featuring original members Carl Giammarese and Nick Fortuna on "Don’t You Care," "Mercy, Mercy, Mercy," "Hey Baby," "Susan" (for which Susan Cowsill emerged to jokingly claim credit), and "Kind of a Drag"; The Grass Roots ("I'd Wait a Million Years," "Sooner or Later," "Let's Live for Today" and "Midnight Confessions"); The Association, with originals Jim Yester and Jules Alexander on landmark hits “Windy,” “Never My Love,” “Everything That Touches You,” “Cherish” and “Along Comes Mary”; and Paul Revere and the Raiders’ vocalist Mark Lindsay, solid as ever on the classics “Where the Action Is," "Just Like Me," "Hungry," "Arizona," Good Thing," "Indian Reservation," and "Kicks.”
Every year the Turtles come out as something nuttier, in this case, Volman (Flo) as the snowman in Frozen, lipsynching Idina Menzel’s “Let It Go,” then assuaging his perturbed partner Kaylan (Eddie) by giving him a Snow Queen wig and kicking the set into high gear with “She'd Rather Be With Me,” “You Baby” and “It Ain’t Me Babe,” pausing to encourage the SRO hall to take pictures of the pair, at their advanced age, perhaps for the last time—though Volman assured everyone that they do hope to live another year in order to return with Happy Together Tour 2016.
Post-Turtles Flo & Eddie fans surely recognized Frank Zappa’s “Peaches En Regalia” intro to The Turtles' hit “Elenore,” Flo & Eddie having famously sung with Zappa’s Mothers of Invention after The Turtles disbanded. After ending their closing segment, of course, with “Happ Together,” Volman and Kaylan, as has become their Happy Together Tour tradition, brought back the other acts to sing a snippet of their most famous song, ending again with “Happy Together.”
Also this year—for the fourth year in a row—Volman brought along 10 of his students from Nashville’s Belmont Unviersity, where he serves as a professor (“Professor Flo”) in the Mike Curb College of Entertainment and Music Business. For the first leg of the tour they get a hands-on taste of tour management, stage management, audio engineering, tour accounting and merchandise sales, along with continued learning each day during the processes of load-in, setup, tear-down and load-out. It was their last night, and during the “Happy Together” grand finale, Professor Flo introduced the kids and they sang and danced along with the rest.
And speaking of merch, The Association’s Yester offered another lesson in noting how “demeaning” it is for artists to have to announce that they have CDs for sale in the lobby. “But it’s much more demeaning,” he added beseechingly, “to have to carry it all back to the bus!”
From Steve Smith's Blog:
Nearly 50 years after The Turtles’ heyday, the band’s two frontmen — lead singer Howard Kaylan and his wacky backup singing cohort Mark Volman — still pack ‘em in, with the help from a few other beloved artists from the era.
The Turtles’ annual Happy Together Tour also starred The Association, The Cowsills, The Grass Roots, The Buckinghams and former Paul Revere and The Raiders singer Mark Lindsay (expanding this year from five acts to six), all playing to a nearly sold-out Pacific Amphitheatre of almost 12,000 fans at the Orange County Fair on July 26.
These groups haven’t had all of their original members in eons. However, what’s important is that the touring members are perpetuating the band’s hits and legacies, and as long as the songs are still being performed with integrity in credible fashion that’s what matters to their audiences.
The setup was simple: each act showcased four of their biggest hits. Then, after The Turtles wrapped their always wild and crazy hit-filled set (“She’s Rather Be With Me,” “It ain’t Me Babe,” “Eleanor”), they brought back each artist one by one to reprise their biggest hit before everyone joined in and sang The Turtles biggest smash, 1967’s “Happy Together.”
Among the numerous highlights were when The Cowsills touring siblings Susan, Bob and Paul brought out their brother John, who has been the drummer for The Beach Boys the past 13 years, to join them on their biggest hit — and theme to “Hair” that hit No. 2 in 1969. The Buckinghams propulsive take on “Hey Baby (They’re Playing Our Song),” that reached No. 12 in 1967, was also a fun moment of the night.
The Association, led by singer Jim Yester, whose vocals remain mostly unchanged, delivered an unbeatable four-pack that included three No. 1’s, “Windy,” Cherish, “ Never My Love” and their first biggie, “Along Comes Mary,” that made it to No. 7 in 1966.
The most poignant moment of the night occurred when The Grass Roots dedicated its 1967 track, “Let’s Live for Today,” to the vets in the audience (the song was particularly popular with military personnel serving in Vietnam), prefaced by their chilling a capella take on Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young’s ode to that war’s dead, “Find the Cost of Freedom” (written by Stephen Stills).
At age 73, Lindsay is still a wonder. Commanding the stage much as did when he fronted The Raiders, Lindsay came off decades younger than he is, with his rock and roll vocals intact. His set of rocking classics, including “Good Thing,” “Kicks” and “Hungry” are unimpeachable evidence that his old band deserves to be in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. It’s one of the Hall’s many disgraceful embarrassments that not only are Paul Revere and The Raiders not in, but this band has never even been nominated for induction.

Joe C. - Just got back from Effingham, IL and the HTT show!! The Cowsills were, of course, "Top of the Pops" as the British would say. but the whole show was wonderful. When we got to the EPC (Effingham Performance Center), we had a reserve parking pass that put us right along side of the tour bus!! We started to walk away, but I took another look and Bob was outside playing some kind of ball game with Paul and other members. Susan was there too but was just watching, She noticed me, came right over and we started talking as though we had been friends all our lives. With the C’s I’ve always felt that way, but it was so fantastic that she treated em like an old friend as well!! I asked her if she knew who I was and she said, “Yes, you’re Joe, right?” I said yes and we hauggged and hugged just like old friends do. She told me we were going to enjoy the show and we certainly did. My cousin snapped this photo. It was time to get ready for the show, so she went back in and I told them to have a grat one. Thanks again, Susan, from the bottom of my heart. The Cowsills in Effingham, Pt. 2!!! Here's the other picture we got, after the concert. The Cowsills came out and greeted all of us fans, posed for lots of pictures and signed lots of record covers and other memorabilia. In this picture, third from the left is my cousin Glenda. I'm next to her. And my second cousin Mindy, who drove us to the venue, is on the far right. I had tons of stuff to sign and still had lots more I left at home, but they were wonderful, just as expected. I got to talk to all three this time. I made sure Bob got his present and card (which he loved and appreciated) and we talked for a few minutes. Paul and I did a little schtick together. Hopefully there’s a video coming, but not sure of the quality. They were just as I imagined them. So man hugs and so many good times, all due to the one and only Cowsills. Thanks folks, I can die now!!! LOL!!!

Keith O. - Concert Review: Happy Together Tour 2015, Effingham IL.
The Grassroots were fantastic. What a string of great hits, done extremely well. They were so tight harmonically, and they seriously rocked hard. Highlight: Temptation Eyes. That bass line and that lead vocal....wow.
The Buckinghams next. Bassist Nick Fortuna was so cool. I loved the banter about how the TV people thought they were English (they are from Chicago.) Highlight: Mercy, Mercy, Mercy. Classic Frat Rock.
Mark Lindsay was “kicking” with more energy than a man his age is expected to have. My only disappointment with Mark was just a matter of personal taste; I would have liked to have heard some of Mark’s other songs that were perhaps a little less known than the hits. “I’m Not Your Stepping Stone” would have been a great one (a bigger hit for the Monkees than the Raiders, but the Raiders were first), and “Happen ’68,” on which Mark comes a close to Otis Redding in delivery. Highlight: “Good Thing,” a reminder that Paul Revere and the Raiders came as close as anyone to being the American Rolling Stones, in no small part due to Mark’s lead vocals.
The Cowsills. What can I say? Virtually every band in HTT was a harmony band, but the Cowsills are THE best harmony band in the business. That DNA thing just knocks it out of the park. And the between-songs banter felt so spontaneous and genuine, the least “canned” of any act in the show. Set list had the hits: TRTPAOT, Indian Lake We Can Fly, Hair. The somewhat unexpected “Love American Style” was a pleasant addition. Highlight: Not a song but a person. Bob is just so infectiously happy on this tour! To me, Bob has always been the serious Cowsill, somewhat reserved. The Cowsill who anchored the band and tried to ride herd on the hyper-kinetic Paul and Susan. This show, Bob’s just got this big grin on his face, going right along with the antics. He truly seems to be having the time of his life.
The Association: I just want to say that there was some talk on the web about the band’s vocals not being what they once were (talk that I am not entirely innocent of) I just want to say, I saw no weaknesses in the ban’s vocal prowess at this show. I got chills up my spine when they did the modulation in “Cherish.” They impressed the hell out of me. Highlight: “Along Comes Mary” showed that this band isn’t just about pop harmonies; this is a ROCK band.
The Turtles RULE! I laughed, I sang along until I was hoarse. Flo and Eddie played the audience like a fiddle It is no wonder that Frank Zappa recruited them for the Mothers of Invention and his movies. Goofy and yet totally in control of their craft. Highlight: Howard Kaylan’s vocals. He was mostly on my side of the stage, so I heard him with more clarity than some of the other acts. The years have not diminished his voice one iota.
I stayed put in my seat at intermission, right on the aisle, and I heard people talking as they headed out to the lobby. I heard "Cowsills" name dropping repeatedly. They couldn't all have been hardcore Hairheads like me, so I think it is safe to say they made an impression on the audience.
Back with more Cowsills dis in a little while
The first time I met Bob (a few years back in Branson) I was sort of tongue-tied and didn't really know what to say to him. This time, though, I had enough wherewithal to ask some questions I have had for a good while. I asked him about his songwriting process, and he told me he always writes the music first and that the music is easier for him than the lyrics. He also told me he is a "batch" writer. He goes for years writing nothing, then will write a batch of 16 or so songs, one after the other. He had a batch that became the Cocaine Drain sessions, a batch with Peter Bunch in the ‘80s, a batch that became Global . . . and NOW a batch that will be part of a new CD when the Cowsills go back to the studio in February 2016 (more about that later).
Bob has been an unknowing mentor to me as a songwriter. I have studied his songs … the way they are put together and particularly how the vocals are arranged. He doesn’t get nearly the praise he deserves for his genius.
I had a great talk with Paul. I finally asked him about his songwriting, because I know he had some co-writes with Bob on "On My Side," but I wasn't aware of too much else he had written. He told me that some of the songs on the Cocaine Drain sessions were his (since I didn't have liner notes on that unreleased recording, I didn't know that.) He writes at the piano, he said, and some of his new songs will be on the next CD. He told me that the album will feature songs by each of them, so it sounds like this will be a sort of songwriters' collective, where each of them comes to the studio with their own songs and the group will back the songwriter for that song. Very cool.
I also asked him about how he got the gig managing of the Fillmore East (something I had just heard about in an interview recently). He said he worked for a company out of Nebraska that was brought in to keep the Fillmore East going after Bill Graham went to California to start the Fillmore West. He lived in Bill Graham's office at FE, haha. He told me if he had stayed in that business, he would probably have is own company by now, managing road crews for shows (lights, sound, etc.) " . . . But I'm a three-year guy," he told me, meaning that he has tended to move on to different jobs every three years or so.
Final bit of Cowsills news... Susan dropped this little bon mot on me, and Paul chimed in on it. "What would you think of the Cowsills signing with Universal?" Think about this for a minute, folks. The Cowsills 20th Century Masters CD is on Universal/Polygram. The Cs just won a big lawsuit against them for unpaid royalties. On the one hand, that means Universal could be sore losers. On the other hand, they realize that the Cowsills can still sell records because they themselves have profitted from those records. Paul and Susan were chuckling over the irony of the new CD maybe coming out on Universal. I pointed out that John Fogarty (Creedence Clearwater Revival) is back on Fantasy Records after decades of bitter lawsuits. "Right, so there is a precedent for this sort of thing," said Paul
