Tori: Hi
Cowsills: Hi Tori
Tori: Hi. Two questions. The first question is Paul was in the band when you did We Can Fly, how come he isn't on the album cover?
Paul: I'll tell you why, because they didn't like me then.
Susan: We did like him.
Bob: No, we
Tori: But you were so cute.
Paul: Well thanks
Bob: I guess he just didn't show up for the session because
Susan: He was there.
Paul: Maybe I was doing my own photo session somewhere in New York with a lot of photographers all around and many many lights and I was just moving and grooving.
Susan: I got to say that's a vary observant question, Tori. And we appreciate your call.
Paul: I always ask the same question.
Rich: Stand by and when we come back we're going to the phones again. We're live and toll free 1-800-929-9393 Tonight our in studio guests are The Cowsills My name isd Rich Fields and you are listening to Rock and Roll USA

Rich: Hi and welcome back to Rock and Roll USA Live from Hollywood on Columbia Square. Tonight our in studio guests are The Cowsills. You can call and talk to them live and toll free. Lines are open now. You guys are a lot of fun, let me tell you. --- Jesus, what happen?
Paul: I don't know. They turned us off.
Rich: You guys brought your guitars in tonight. You feel like playing at all?
Paul: Sure !!
Susan: Why not
Rich: Pick those things up. What are you going to play for us this evening?
Bob: Where's my pick?
Susan: Here
Paul: I don't know what do you want to hear Rich?
Rich: You and Susan split a pick in half there
Paul: While these guys are getting ready here, I got to tell you, the guys in the booth, John and Ricky are doing one heck of a job.
Susan: Awesome
Rich: Let's give them a round of applause
Paul: They are constantly holding their hands up, like they want to give us high tens and if we were in there with you, we'd do it.
Rich: Alright, so Bob's going to play and the rest of you are going to sing? How's this going to happen?
Paul: Yeah it's going to happen, just like you said.
Susan: Bob can never keep a hold of his pick.
Bob: OK I'm there I'm there I'm there
Rich: Can I make a request?
Susan: Sure
Rich: Indian Lake
Susan: Ohhhhh Rich !!!!
Bob: Richard Fields !!
Rich: Can I hear it?
Bob: Were you named for oil? Rich Fields
Rich: Let me pull this mic over for you. You need another one to sing?
Susan: By the way, John, we're going to miss you on this one buddy.
Paul: John we do miss you.
Song: Indian Lake
Bob: Now you got to understand something Rich, we're like 15, 16 year old guys and they bring this song to us. We liked the Rolling Stones and the Beatles and they are telling us about this lake, right.
Paul: And they wanted us to sound like Indians.
Bob: We're going "No, we don't want to do Indian Lake. No we don't want to do it"
Paul: Bob can't I ask you something though? Isn't it a lot easier to be an Indian at 37 and what 39?
Susan: And deal with it you mean?
Bob: I still have trouble with the war hoops but retrospectively I enjoy the song.
Paul: I'll handle the war hoops. And I know John loves to do the war hoops too.
Susan: Don't you John.
Paul: Oh no
Rich: Well how about a nice big round of applause for The Cowsills, man that was great
Applause
Paul: That was us applauding cuz we're the only ones here !!
Rich: No, look through the glass. You guys got a standing ovation through the glass there. The engineers and the producers there. Everybody - wow !! The Cowsills, playing live - Indian Lake. Big hit for you guys 1968, another smash. You guys were full of 'em.
Paul: Well we're full of it.
Rich: You know as I said that I said, "Now they're good. They'll just pick up on it"
Paul: It's a good thing we're on radio cuz it could have gone on and on and
Rich: That's right. Alright, let's go back to the phones. A lot of people want to talk to you so let's do it. Let's go to Lisa from West Hills. Say hi to The Cowsills.
Lisa: Hi there
Cowsills: Hi Lisa
Lisa: I wanted to ask you of all your older songs, which one was your favorite?
Paul: This is Paul and out of all the old songs I'd really have to say Poor Baby. It's wasn't a big smash hit all over the United States. It was pretty big out here but we loved Poor Baby.
Susan: Bob what's yours?
Paul: Bob, I didn't mean to be speaking for you.
Bob: Well I liked Poor Baby. I thought it was pretty well recorded. And I liked In Need Of A Friend which
Susan: Oh yeah I was going to say that.
Bob: Were you? OK then I don't like In Need Of A Friend. OK Susan did.
Susan: OK I like In Need Of A Friend
Paul: And it was the first stereo 45 ever that went out.
Susan: What was?
Paul: In Need of A Friend Oh trust me on this one guys. They are all looking at me here for people out there like I don't know what I'm talking about.
Rich: You mean The Cowsills or ever?
Bob: In the history of records that was the first?
Paul: First single 45. I'm sure I'm right.
Rich: OK Paul Cowsill, you heard it here.
(break in tape)
Rich: From Woodland Hills, Tony say hi to the Cowsills
Tony: Hi Bob, Susan
Bob/Susan: Hi Tony
Paul: Tony don't want to say hi to Paul good good
Tony: How you doing?
Paul: Good Good !!
Susan: What's up, Tony?
Tony: We're waiting for ya
Susan: You're waiting for us?
Tony: Waiting for you to put out that new album buddy.
Susan: Well, we're looking forward to that actually Tony.
Rich: When is the date? Any ideas of when this is going to happen?
Paul: No, I was going to ask Tony, do you work for a record company?
Rich: ha ha So you guys are shopping around for a record deal right?
Bob: We're at a lot of label in town right now and it's going through that little step by step process that it goes through.
Susan: That's why we're going away this summer.
Bob: we're going to perform. We're not going to twiddle our thumbs while in town, we're going to go out and work.
Rich: So you mentioned talking to labels, is it too late for other labels to get involved in this now?
Bob: Absolutely not. Just give us a call. Acutally give Rich a call.
Rich: I'll pass you on to one of these guys.
Paul: He's put together two deals for us and it's going well.
Rich: They listen to Rock and Roll USA. I tell you. Let's go to the phones. Line 3, Dennis from Northridge. Say hi to the Cowsills, Dennis
Dennis: Oh man you guys stole my question. In Need Of A Friend, The Rain, The Park and The Girl and the Other Things are probably my two all time favorites until I found one of your CD's in the store a few months ago and In Need Of A Friend, did it ever get any air time? How come I never heard that before? It's a fantastic song.
Bob: In Need Of A Friend was released, I believe after We Can Fly and I think it got to Top 40. I think that's as high as it got. I can't remember to be honest. But I thought it was a well written, well crafted piece of work.
Dennis: Fantastic. Any of you Cowsill junkie out there find it man, play it !!
Susan: I agree with you. Thank you.
Bob: Thanks man
Rich: Maybe we'll play it right now
Dennis: Do it if you got it.
Rich: We have it. I got everything man Wait, I got one caller here standing by. I think you guys might want to talk to. John Cowsill huh?
John: Yeah (laugh)
Cowsills: John Yeah !!!
Bob: Johnny Babe !!
Paul: Did you like the war hoops?
John: You Butthead
Susan: John what are you askin?
Rich: What did you call him?
Susan: He called him a butthead. It's a little family affection there.
Rich: OK So did you like that Indian Lake live there, John?
John: Yeah.
Susan: Missed your harmony bud.
John: Oh my god. You guys are like Spinal Tap.
Susan: Thanks a lot pal !!
John: I'm Spinal Tap records. I was going to call and be the famous producer to say, "You guys I have a deal" "I got that rich and famous contract right here in my back pocket."
Rich: So do you guys all play together still?
Susan: Oh yeah
Rich: Or is John out on his own?
Susan: No !! He's in our band !!
Bob: Really he just got stuck in traffic.
Rich: You said he was doing a gig in Ojai, now John what are you doing out there?
John: Guys, guys, turn down your radio in the background, I'm getting a little delay.
Susan: John, explain to this man why you aren't here buddy.
John: Why I'm not there? Cuz man I get gigging up here.
Rich: Listen man we ask for The Cowsills tonight. You know I feel like I got cheated.
Susan: Rich is a little ticked off, John.
John: I mean ...
Rich: No they said you had some problems getting here.
Bob: John, but we do play. I play at Pickwick's Pub every Friday.
Susan: We rehearse three nights a week.
Bob: We're out there working and having fun.
Rich: Well next time, when you get your number one hit on this next new album, you come back and then maybe John will grace us with his presence, I don't know.
Susan: John, what do you say to that honey?
John: I don't know you guys. You know I leave the interviews to those three cuz they're really antic and I'm pretty calm about that.
Susan: Yeah right !!!
Paul: John, I got that carrot cake for you.
John: Hey Paul !!
Paul: Can you dig it?
John: When you said that I was saying, "Oh Val will be stoked!!" Hey guys, by the way, everybody, ...
Rich: This is like you never talk. Million of guys are listening and you're...
John: No, my wife is expecting a baby, Val. Not a baby Val, it might be a baby John, but Val is expecting a baby.
Susan: Well what do you want to tell us John?
John: It's due November 11th which is Paul's birthday !!
Paul: And John promised me if it was born on November 11th, I think they may go for a C-section around then, they're going to name him Paul
Susan: Or Paula
Paul: Thanks John
Rich: Yeah John. Good to hear from you. Next time these guys come on hopefully you can get down here.
John: Hey you sound like you're going to cut me off and give somebody else some air time.
Susan: You got it Johnny boy
Rich: That's exactly what's going to happen.
Paul: Everybody is waving their arms like helicopters John.
Susan: John, wait, does he have any parting words?
John: Hang on. I got a lot of things to say.
Susan: We can't John. We're getting the cut throat thing.
Paul: We love you John, but we're bumping you man. Bump him Billy or Ricky.
Rich: OK the guy mentioned In Need Of A Friend. Do we have time to play it? Yes we do. How'd this come about for you guys?
Bob: It's a song that Bill and I wrote in our apartment when all nine of us were living there and it's just a very touching song with a real nice arrangement.
Paul: You'd think they had enough friends, but they needed one more.
Bob: It's just about loneliness sometimes, you know.
Rich: And folks think you sound like The Partridge Family on that song.
Susan: Oh please.
Bob: In Need Of A Friend?
Rich: Yeeaaaahhh
Susan: Chronologically that's incorrect.
Rich: That's right. You guys came along first, so maybe they copied you.
Bob: I thought it was more like The Cowsills, but that's -
Susan: You be the judge of it.
Rich: That's right. In Need Of A Friend - Cowsills - 1968. You got 'em live on Rock and Roll USA
Song: In Need Of A Friend
Rich: Rock and Roll USA and The Cowsills
Cowsills: Yeah
Rich: The first stereo 45
Susan: That's right
Rich: According to Paul Cowsill, ladies and gentlemen, the first stereo 45 ever
Susan: I think we have a special guest this evening.
Rich: Is that true, Jack Snyder is here. Is that true that that was the first stereo 45 ever?
Jack says yes. If Jack Snyder says it's true, it must be true.
Susan: I agree with ya. You got to special guest here. The guy who sang In Need Of A Friend, my brother Bill.
Rich: Line 7, Bill say hi to The Cowsills hahahaha
Bill: Hello
Susan: Hi Billy !!
Rich: How you doing? Bill Cowsill, ladies and gentlemen
Bill: Not to, listen, not that I don't believe it, OK but you know how there's so many imposter groups out these days. I'd like to make sure I am in effect talking to the real Cowsills.
Susan: OK go ahead. Pop quiz, real fast.
Bill: OK well. This is going out to Paul. If you're really Paul Cowsill then you'll know, what was your nickname when you were six years old?

Bill: I'm in Vancouver, British Columbia, yeah
Rich: No kidding, what's going on for you? What are you working on?
Bill: Oh gee lots of stuff.
Bob: Getting to be with us, is what he's working on.
Susan: But Bill tell these guys that you said you might come up and hang out with us for awhile. Confirm that for us, will you?
Bill: Well, you know,
Susan: Bill, confirm it, confirm it quickly
Paul: They'll believe it when they see you in June.
Bill: All these vicious rumors unfortunately are fast becoming true.
Susan: Excellent
Bill: Now I'm up here working at the moment with Bumstead Management which is Larry Awanagus who worked with K D Lang and Colin James is also under that management and uh
Susan: You're in good company young brother.
Bill: I'm in pretty good company you know and I can't wait to get a deal so I can rent you guys.

Bob: Well thank you. We got back together because - it took a long time - but basically we started singing together and it sounded good and it felt good and it just felt right. The timing is right and it's now. Everybody writes. I write with my wife Mary a lot of the new stuff.
Susan: I write with my girlfriend, Vicki Peterson.
Bob: Barry and I have written a song and everyone gets their hands in it and it's a real group effort and it's a lot of fun.
Rich: Now Susie, you just mentioned Vicki Peterson.
Susan: He made me say that cuz you called as Tori and then everybody knew and then...
Rich: She called in earlier as Tony or something
Susan: Tori That's what I call her
Paul: That's for saying uncle Vicki
Susan: Paul didn't know that you thought he was cute. I think that you need to ..
Bob: That's OK Mary called in as Dennis so haha haha

Susan: Thanks a lot
Paul: It's good to be home. It's good to be back.
Rich: What would you like to ask Betty?
Betty: I'd like to know, is anybody, are you going to have anybody in the group all by yourself OK, but are you going to have anybody else traveling with you? Any other group?
Susan: Not that we know of. It's pretty up in the air who we're going to be playing with. We're just going to be playing everywhere and

Susan: We don't know, it's a secret.
Rich: Do you guys have your own band?
Susan: Yes we all play instruments.
Bob: John's drums, Paul's keyboards, everyone else guitars and everybody sings.
Rich: Alright, let's move on. Let's go to Belinda from Long Beach. Say hi to the Cowsills, Belinda.
Belinda: Yeah, hi. I wanted to know, in The Rain, The Park and Other Things, how old were all of you guys when you recorded that?
Susan: Oh gees I wasn't even singing.
Bob: No, let's see, I was 16, this is Bob. Then, Bill was 17 and Barry was probably 14 and John 12 and Susan was there but she was just 6 years old. She wasn't old enough yet.
