As Is Lyrics

As Is

As Is - Lud Von Records - 1998

The following are Bob's comments about As Is posted October 28, 1998. "From my perspective Barry has entered his "age of enlightment" phase. He's produced a terrific CD, his webpage is almost ready and we will be linking to that shortly and he has obviously stepped forward into the light as a prolific songwriter and, as always, a great singer. Barry could step on a stage with any of us and hold his own at any given moment, hi fact, with no one else on stage he would be riveting and hold his own. "Train" is a great song and "Old Timeless**, "Legends Of Love* and "Anthem" are all great pieces of work, just to name a few off of As Is."

Rock's favorite recluse has unleashed "As Is" his first solo album in, well ... ever. When asked about the new CD Barry said, "Amidst various suicide attempts, a few near death car crashes, several personality disorders and years of anxiety over a past that can still haunt, I figured I'd just shut the #@&!*% up and put out some tunes."

Train
(Barry Cowsill)
Lead Singer: Barry

Ever since I hopped my first train, I've never been the same. So now you can all blame it on the train. Wasn't a Conductor - jus' a Traveler.    Bass and Vocal: Peter Holsapple    Drums: Carlo Nuccio    Produced by: Paul Dugre

People call me when they want me,
Must be a line about a mile long.
All the flavors that they done me,
Almost time to the up and gone.

Take me somewhere like to Austin or Boston.
I'm leaving on a train.
Ride across the open plain.
I'm leaving on a train.
Check out.

Someone told me once I'd have it,
A little planet I could call my own, Nobody's gonna grab it,
Well if I want it, it could be my own.

Take me somewhere like Chicago or Waco.
I'm leaving on a train.
Fly across the open plain.
I'm leaving on a train.
Check out.

Where the pretty lights shine for free.
Come on, come on,
No one hanging on a monkey tree.

Where the show never let's you go.
So come on, come on,
And coming soon to a theater near you.

My feet could never fail me.
I got a call from for the station man,
If someone oughta phone me,
Just tell 'em I've gone to get a tan.

Take me somewhere like to Austin or Boston.
I'm leaving on a train.
Fly across the dusty plain.
I'm leaving on a train.
Check out.

Whoa feelin' about a way to travel,
Said I'm leaving on a train.
Not crowded on the easy floor now,
I'm leaving on a train.

I'm leaving on a train.
Said on a train now, train, train.

River Of Love
(Barry Cowsill)
Lead Singer: Barry

We're all reaching out anyways - arn't we?    Bass and Vocal: Peter Holsapple    Drums: Carlo Nuccio    Produced by: Paul Dugre

She had to leave me,
Said she had some place to go.
I knew her heart was searchin' for it's home.
So what's to do when you let go of flying falcons,
'Cept to watch them disappear till they're are no more.

But as she flew, well I called out.
And I knew she heard her lover shout,
'Cause she tipped her wings before the fade.

Though the sun may set yet another day,
I'll be there for the rising one.
And maybe it's true that you're goin' away,
But I'll be waitin' by the River of Love.
I'll be waitin' by the River of Love.

The heart's a funny thing,
Sometimes it never shakes.
What happen to the friend that went before?

And it may ponder, it may wonder till it finds
Love's secret phone to call
Upon that soul.

And just sometimes, you never know,
You may be dreamin' but you feel it grow,
And you hope one day it will return.

Though the sun may set yet another day,
I'll be there for the rising one.
And maybe it's true that you're gone away,
But I'll be waitin' by the River of Love.
I'll be waitin' by the River of Love.

Another day goes rolling through my heart,
As if it was another empty cup.
And I've been walking through these fields that I've have known before.
But I never give up till I see you again,
Babe I'll never give up at all.

So I take my precious time that I hang around.
And I'll count the beats of my heart one by one.
And even if it's just some silly game I'm playin'.
Deep down I'll know it isn't just for fun.

'Cuz where's a will, well there's a way,
And if I have to kneel and pray.
Then I'll kneel here and pray away.

Though the sun may set yet another day,
I'll be there for the rising one.
And maybe it's true that you're goin' away
But I'll be waitin' by the River of Love.
I'll be waitin' by the River of Love.
I'll be waitin' by the River of Love.

Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, whoooooo

Another Was A Brother
(Barry Cowsill)
Lead Singer: Barry

Every musician's plight into the music industry. Recorded in the insollent (I've got a track record!) Ketih Keller's Chez Flames Studio in New Orleans. He's a Teddy Bear really. He also produced it. Me on everything.

Down in Memphis licking dust,
Off the boot a record man you thought you'd trust.
Looken to nowhere hoping for more,
Not too much you don't know what's in store.

Yeah we're trained in the gutter,
gut 'n wrench,
All the musical shit,
From the industrial stench,
And out he played,
And a play he could,
And another was the brother of Johnny B. Good.

Over in Austin, swings doors,
Doors that slam or open wide.
There on the corner, out in the street,
They're playin' for nothing, but the people you meet.
With a bit of luck or some other plan,
Get you off the streets and playin' in some band.
So out he played like he knew he should,
And another was the brother of Johnny B. Good.

Fightin' a drag, but fight you must.
Especially when dealing with the upper crust.
Vampire spacehogs all around,
Shoving their way to what they think they've found.
Hey New Orleans this is all you fault,
Yeah this is all your fault but you feel so good.
So out he played and play he would,
And another was the brother of Johnny B. Good.

Bombay
(Barry Cowsill)
Lead Singer: Barry

Where I'd rather be most of the time. A Neo-Mythical state of mind no doubt - I dare you to try to get THERE.   Drums: Carlo Nuccio     Guitar: Peter Holsapple    Produced by Peter as well.

Paintin' your dreams in the sunset
Lookin' for the chance to play.
Watchin' the moon in the river,
Livin' in old Bombay.
Livin' in old Bombay.
Will I know true love when I found it now,
Livin' in old Bombay.

Washin' your wing on the shoreline,
Singin' as the treetops sway.
Cashing your chips for a livin'
Livin' in old Bombay.
Livin' in old Bombay.
Said I know true love when I found now
Livin' in old Bombay

I had plans to burn
And I need, to learn
And I think a lot, and that's all I do
So while..
Livin' in old Bombay.
Livin' in old Bombay.

Crossing your touch on your true love,
Watching as your fingers play
Hearing the birdy go singin'
Livin' in old Bombay
Livin' in old Bombay,

Well I hope you ya'll for me
'Cause I'm living in old Bombay.
Not far
Livin' in old Bombay.

Pickin' your spot to lay on,
Swingin' on that old tree vine.
Feelin the sway of the east breeze,
And you're livin' on time.
You got the love I want bad,
I'd chase you anywhere.
Chasing you all over until,
Oh baby I find you in old Bombay.
Find you in old Bombay.

Yes we're loving across in the moonlight,
Find you in old Bombay.
Yes we're loving across in the moonlight,
Find you livin' in old Bombay.
Livin' in old Bombay.
Livin' in old Bombay.

Take me home.

Anthem
(Barry Cowsill)
Lead Singer: Barry

Somewhere over the rainbow. Never did think it was in the back yard anyways. Me on Everything.

There'a song in all you feel, rollin' on the wind.
Givin' off a light,
Light enough to blind your eyes.
It's been around so long before us,
That don't mean we ain't a part.
It ain't the kind that got a chorus
It's just a song inside our hearts.
Say what? It's your Anthem.
Yeah if we can pin it down to only just one sound.
Yeah it's your anthem.

Every corner on this old earth
Takin' a death and givin' a birth
Might leave a legesy we all could work
That notes might ring forever
With an Anthem.

Ten Four

'Cause I may say, there's got to be a way
Everything, all the time
And you believe truth then you got no fear
Everybody, everbody got to same idea
Said Anthem
Living for a song
Come on babe come on babe
Sittin on your tongue
It's an Anthem.

Yeah you've been livin' alone on the street.
Got to beg for your meat, for a ransom.
Been drivin' in your Bently,
Spenting money gently,
Man, sum is handsome.
No matter if you are a stranger,
No matter how you came to be,
No matter what you got to show for,
The song is here in you and me.
It's singin' through the trees, it's born in every breeze,
It's an Anthem.

And I start to sing it out
Oh the head is goin' to shout
With an Anthem.
Hey no sweat about it all,
We only be on this planet for so long.
We all got them same ideas
Them ol' same songs
And you know we're goin' do it babe,
We come so long we're an Anthem.

Da world
Yeah let me tell you you're an Anthem
And the stars singin' out.

When Hearts Collide
(Barry Cowsill)
Lead Singer: Barry

Inspired by The Color Purple - when Master separated the two sisters who had that sing-song thing as they were parting.   Bass and Vocal: Peter Holsapple     Drums: Carlo Nuccio    Produced by: Peter Holsapple.

In the early morning
With n'ry a breeze,
My love will rise,
Like an old oak tree.

And I'll reach up
And touch your sky.
Feel your sun
Come closer.

When Hearts Collide
When Hearts Collide
When Hearts Collide

No matter how far.
Or long ago.
You'll live in me,
For always.
And we will sing,
And take to flight,
On the wings of our love.

When Hearts Collide
When Hearts Collide
When Hearts Collide

Just takin' in mind
With all the luck
And of all things
The way we struck
Two separate worlds
In a long abyss
And when we hit how could we miss.

And like a mother,
Laying me down
For the timeless sleep,
Of lovers.
I'll cover you up,
Just like an old oak tree.
My branches bend,
They surround you.

When Hearts Collide
When Hearts Collide
When Hearts Collide

That's for sure

Chain You Down
(Barry Cowsill)
Lead Singer: Barry

For every guy who's afraid he can't get the girl.   Bass and Vocal: Peter Holsapple     Drums: Carlo Nuccio    Produced by: Paul Dugre.

I don't want to Chain You Down, girl,
I don't want to see you blue.
All I want to do is love you,
Tell me what I should do.
Tell me what I got to do.

I don't want to see you sad, girl,
I don't want to make you cry.
All I want to do is see that you
Never let a true love die.
Never let a true love die

I was so unkind,
Love can be so cruel.
You don't realize,
All I want is you.

But I don't want to cheat your love, babe,
I don't want to sell you lies
All I want to do is hold you
Oh and all I'm bound to try.
Baby I'm bound to try.

I was so unkind,
And you thought I knew.
Now I know you're blind,
All I want is you.

But I don't want to chain you down, girl,
I don't want to see you blue.
All I want to do is love you,
Tell me what I should do.
Tell me what I got to do.

I don't want to chain you down, girl,
I don't want to chain you down, no,
I don't want to chain you down.

Sweet n' Dirty Girl
(Leroy P. Marinell, Jim Tullio)
Lead Singer: Barry

Now ... this one ... ahem ... was produced and written by the notorious LeRoy P. Marinell and the tolerant Jim Tullio. Roy wrote Werewolves of London and co-wrote Excitable Boy with some other notorious notables. (by the way, "V.E.G." in the first verse means Very-Evil-Grin.) Oi-Roy and quite frankly, having a notorious song on this CD is adventurous in it's own right. All instruments were Roy and Jim with a Drum Loop from the infamous New Orleans Drummer, Big John Tommesey.

Back east it's snowy and wet
So I went out surfing the net.
Lookin' for some trouble.

I had my laptop on my knee
I was wearing my V E G
I wasn't too suttle.

You think they were lying?
Those girls told me they were fine.
And I believed them.

I thought "What about me?"
How close to the truth should I be.
Should I deceive them?

Ah the way that they described themselves is great.
And like everybody else I didn't hesitate when they said,

Let me be you Sweet n' Dirty Girl, sir
I want to be your Sweet n' Dirty Girl,
Please, let me be you Sweet n' Dirty Girl, sir
I want to be your Sweet n' Dirty Girl,
Uh huh, your Sweet n' Dirty Girl

And Tina from Texas, she's fine with both sexes,
All she wears is a smile and some pearls.
When her hubby's not at home,
She's got her modem in phone.
She's been chattin' with boys and with girls.
She said, "Honey give me all that you've got,
'Cause when you treat me bad it really makes me hot."

Let me be you Sweet n' Dirty Girl, sir,
I want to be your Sweet n' Dirty Girl,
Please, let me be you dirty little Girl, sir
I want to be your Sweet n' Dirty Girl,
Ooooh your Sweet n' Dirty Girl.

She got it, I want it
She really makes me want it
She's got it, I want it,
I want it, want it, want it
She really loves to flaunt it.
She said

Let me be your Sweet n' Dirty Girl, sir,
I want to be your Sweet n' Dirty Girl,
Please let me be you dirty little girl, sir,
I want to be your Sweet n' Dirty Girl,
Uh huh, your Sweet n' Dirty Girl.

They say the finest girl on line,
the one that drive you crazy with her mind,
Is sweet Sabrina.
The men can't stay away,
They ask about her everyday.
They say, "Where's sweet Sabrina?"
She tells them, "Honey I could fit you like a glove.
All you got to do is tell me what it is you're thinkin' of."

Then I'll be you dirty little girl, sir
I want to be your Sweet n' Dirty Girl,
Please, let me be you Sweet n' Girl, sir
I want to be your dirty little girl,
Oooh you, Sweet n' Dirty Girl

She's got it, I want it
She really makes me want it
She's got it, I want it,
I want it, want it, want it
She really loves to flaunt it
She said

Let me be you Sweet n' Dirty Girl, sir
I want to be your Sweet n' Dirty Girl
Oh let me be you dirty little girl, sir
I want to be your Sweet n' Dirty Girl,
Uh huh, your Sweet n' Dirty Girl.

Kid
(Barry Cowsill)
Lead Singer: Barry

Perfect for gang members. Produced by: Ray Ganucheau (gonna-show)

I've been lookin for some time,
For someone to talk with to pass the time.
Kid can you tell me where it's bound,
When love is the dyest word in town.
And a friend's just a legend that can't be found.

Not long ago I had someone.
We'd fight like lions, but we'd have fun.
Now she's been takin' far away,
But loves sweet poison is here to stay.
Yes it's deep down in me and it's here to stay.

I thought that I could live forever,
On this planet we call our own.
But who wants to live forever,
When there nobody here who knows,
What love is anymore.

So we'll keep on walking through the haze.
For a walk towards better distant days.
Kid can you tell me where it's bound,
When love is the dyest word in town.
And a friend's just a legend that can't be found.

Well love is a game you always play,
With people you hardly know.
Well ain't that the way a man gets,
When people don't show no more.
And no one knocks on your door.

Well the deep dark allies pave the way,
For a walk through desolate distant days
Kid can you tell me where it's bound,
When love is the dyest word in town.
And a friend's just a legend that can't be found.

Wild Thing
(Chip Taylor)
Lead Singer: Barry

The Troggs and Jimi did their version, figured I'd do mine.

Wild Thing, ah, you make my heart sing
You make everything groovy.
Come on, come on Wild Thing

Wild Thing I think you move me,
But I gotta know for sure.
Come on here and a squeeze me tight, you move me.

Wild Thing, you make my heart sing
You make everything groovy.
Come on, come on Wild Thing.

Wild Thing, I like I love you
But I gotta know for sure.
Come on here and kiss me down
I love you.

(I hope you do too. You really don't know what you do to me)

Come on,

Wild Thing, I like I need you,
But I gotta know for sure.
Come on here and show me your bank account.
I need you.

Oh baby Wild Thing,
You make my heart sing,
Oh you make everything groovy.
Come on, come on Wild Thing.
Shake it, shake it Wild Thing.
Give it over to me now Wild Thing.

My Car Don't Lock
(Barry Cowsill)
Lead Singer: Barry

I was in a parking lot, sittin' in my car having a beer in Santa Barbara where the girls are all rich, beautiful ... and snotty. One was passing by when I slurred out "my car don't lock honey" sans: "I don't wanna chain you down girl" ... so much for a love life. Produced by: Ray Ganucheau (gonna-show) - I played the instruments.

When I saw ya,
You were so cute.
I just had to stop.
My Car Don't Lock
My Car Don't Lock

Pulled up beside you,
In my little deuce coup.
I said I don't bite,
My Car Don't Lock
My Car Don't Lock

My car don't like a lonely neighborhood,
Ya see she likes crusin' when something's looking good.
If you wantta we can get lost.
Make sweet love to you
My Car Don't Lock
My Car Don't Lock
My Car Don't Lock
No no

yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah,
hey, hey,
hey, hey,

I'm please to meet you from a reckless home,
I make my home for you.
My Car Don't Lock
My Car Don't Lock

My car likes to get on the freeway.
And then she starts crusin starts movin' everyway.

One, two, three, four,
Gears that shift for you.
My Car Don't Lock
My Car Don't Lock
My Car Don't Lock
My, My Car Don't Lock
My Car Don't, My Car Don't Lock

Right or Wrong
(Barry Cowsill)
Lead Singer: Barry

I was raised a catholic, and I believe in forgiveness at all costs.    Bass and Vocal: Peter Holsapple     Drums: Carlo Nuccio    Produced by: Paul Dugre.

Johnny went down to the grocery store,
He'd been stoppin for a week or more.
Well he didn't think twice about taking the beef,
When you're hungry, man, you gotta eat.
Even if it takes a thief.

Well he's doin' it right or wrong?
Yes doin' it weak or strong?
He had to somehow get along,
Whether he's doin' it right or wrong.

Susie got out of the county jail.
She got a bum rap for shaking her tail.
She had three kids at home and no where to go,
'Cept down the street to the topless show.
Forty five dollars and there she goes again.

Well she's doin' it right or wrong.
Yes she's doin' it weak or strong.
She had to somehow get along,
Whether she's doin' it right or wrong.

Well I feel much better,
Since I've forged ahead.
There's a difference in everything I do.
And man all I can hope for is when I get it down,
Someone else might pick up on it too.

Well the sun man burn and the rain may flood
From the shy and dry to the guts and blood.
There's one thing that you got to learn,
Gotta keep things going to make it churn.
Don't just stand there it's your turn.

Whether you're doin' it right or wrong
Yeah you're doin' it weak or strong.
Well ain't no use in feeling bad, feelin' good feels better Dad
At least you're doing it and that's that,
Whether you're doin' it good or bad.
Whether you're doin' it weak or strong.
Whether you're doin' it right or wrong.

Crack Alley
(Barry Cowsill)
Lead Singer: Barry

I was on top of a building in downtown Los Angeles with friend "Jungle George"; he paged me to join him in a glance at an alley below, where they were dealing crack. As I reflected there on the situation I saw below me, I remarked, "Damn, Geraldo would love this."    Bass and Vocal: Peter Holsapple     Drums: Carlo Nuccio    Produced by: Peter Holsapple. The only live recording so far - Good work Guys.

Holy Mackerel, Glory Be,
Crack Alley is the place for me.
Goin' to sell everything that I own,
Goin' to move me down to Crack Alley.

Livin' in a box by a burger stand,
Outdoor sorority in no man's land.
Going to get my welfare check today,
See if I can make it last.

Five bucks, ten bucks, fifteen more,
Buy a little burrito at the grocery store.
Going to watch the sun go down today.
Goin' to watch it go down Crack Alley.

Holy Mackerel, Glory Be,
Crack Alley is the place for me.
Goin' to sell everything that I own,
Goin' to move me down to Crack Alley.

Well Alli took his first hit a month ago,
Real estate agent how was he to know.
Sweet Nervona in a pipe that glowed.
Tie him up and hold him down.

So kiss the wife and the kids goodbye
Packed up his bag he's goin' to touch some sky.
Movin' down there with the Mission flies,
Guess he's goin' to spend awhile.

Yeah, Holy Mackerel, Glory Be
Crack Alley is the place for me.
Goin' to sell everything that I own,
Goin' to move me down to Crack Alley.

Beam me up Scotty
Give me some class
Scotty got body homeless my ass
Ho momma, rocket jah
A big ten four.
Giddy up, giddy up, giddy up more

Now Paladin Jim was a lucky man
Walking through the street with a gun in his hand.
Lookin for the man with the rock fly plan
Goin to get an upfront loan.
So he walks up to him and he says with a grin
"Eat my gun or else deal me in"
So I got enough jujubes to last all week.
Now it's frozen forever in Crack Alley

Well, Holy Mackerel, Glory Be,
Crack Alley is the place for me
Goin' to sell everything that I own,
Goin' to move me down to Crack Alley.
Goin to move me down to Crack Alley.
Goin' to move me down to Crack Alley.
See y'll there.

Road So Low
(Barry Cowsill)
Lead Singer: Barry

My Steven King, Dark Matinee Tune. Believe me - this song was actually lived through (minus the "forever-night horizons"); 'cause life jus' isn't a skipping record. Produced by: Keith Keller. I played the instruments.

The Road So Low,
She's moving fast.
No lanes for you,
Hey you just may crash.
Time will come,
When you'll be blue,
The Road So Low,
Just might be the road for you.

Times you laugh, it gets funny,
Nowhere else you can go.
Glued to your destination
Headin out on the cold
Headin out on the cold.

The hills so steep,
The wind she cracks,
The time she rolls,
Right off your back.
The tune she hums,
The night for you,
The Road So Low,
Breaks you achin' mind in two.

Move along on the roadway.
See the signs up ahead,
A little bit chilly inside you,
As you're burning round the bend.
Yeah

The Road So Low,
She's charging up.
And when she does.
Ummm you'll drink her cup.
The night will roar,
But the pigs don't turn.
The Road So Low,
Just might be the road you'll learn.

Drift along on the byway,
Think you're off it at last,
And as you're turning the corner,
She'll spit you back to her past.
Yeah, she'll spit you back to her past.

Time will come,
When you see through.
The Road So Low,
Just might be the road for you.

Forever night's arise in everything you do.
Forever night's arise in everything you do.

Whoa, Whoa, Whoa

Legends of Love
(Barry Cowsill)
Lead Singer: Barry

The ultimate in anyone's goal - to attain the pie-in-the-sky with one who soars with you. I did everything on this one.

As we tango free to fly.
As we dance the wings unfold.
Come the spring and kiss the sun,
As the soaring eagles do.
On the winds, the whimms we'll climb
Through spacing currents of our love.

And time to pray our hands in works,
We are the hopeless valentines.
Where there was an endless life,
From the echo of our hearts.
And if there might dare to be,
Some dimmention seeking blood we'll fly

We are Legends of Love,
We're the Legends of Love.

And if we've given, anything
To each other we can set us free
Don't look back at what we were
But think of how our time has come
All the tears, the hell was real.
Till we found the secret door
And it took one chancing clue
And gave the key to me, the key to you.

The others they may say,
We're just on a space parade.
Now we'll just let them point
And wander through their distant haze.
But one day they'll look up,
To see the circling swirling doves of light

We are Legends of Love.

Do we dare to brave the darkest skies
To my light found yours among the restless night
And if there ever was a time
We somehow lost our way
Give me strength to carry on
You would have me in your soul,
Somehow yet you feel my song.
Knowing I'll be with you for the way.

To know this sham are here and gone
Is nothin' but an evil trick to play.
They are Legends of Love.
We are Legends of Love.
'Cause nothing ever breaks apart
The soaring zenith, zennith of the heart.

Ol Timeless
(Barry Cowsill)
Lead Singer: Barry

The pilgrim's pilgrimage tune.

Move on down the road,
Ease me through the door,
Take me to your dreams Ol Timeless
I wantta go.

Move me down the road,
I don't mind the pain.
'Cuz the gates I'm passing through have no set boundaries.

As I cast my blessings to the seventh wind tonight,
I'll keep in mind the promises I made.
From the land I find to hold it for the others,
As I move on down the road.
Ease along the way.
Take me to your dreams Ol Timeless
I gotta know.

Put me on the path,
There's nothing more to say.
'Cept swing your mighty scales,
Let's be onward.

And I take the secret treasures,
Of my heart and soul,
And I'll keep them covered safe within my reach.
Till the time when I can share them with the others.
Move on down the road,
Slip me through the door,
Oh take me to your dreams Ol Timeless
I want for more.
Send me on my way,
To them other times.
There's alot of work ahead for me tomorrow.
