Music amiable to both generations will be the fare when the Cowsills, nationally known family pop-rock group, performs Oct. 28 at West Texas State University.
The Cowsills, which emerged from family sing-along to national acclaim, will appear at 8 p.m. in the Activities Center Ballroom. The presentation is one in a series sponsored by the WTSU Student Activities Council.
Cowsills include mother, Barbara and children – Bob, 22, Paul, 19, Barry, 17, and Susan, 12. Father Bud Cowsill manages the troupe.
The talented group entered the musical field one by one. At the age of 7, Bob joined older brother Bill and they performed as a duo. Barry came in later, first as a bongoist player and later switching to bass guitar after training youngest brother John as percussionist.
The mother joined her progeny in 1969 for their first million-seller, “The Rain, the Park and Other Things.”
Paul made his debut as keyboard man on the Cowsills’ second million-seller, “Hair.” Sister Susan joined the Cowsills in time for their third hit, ”We Can Fly.”
Bob is the group’s composer, having writer a number of tunes including the hit, “the Prophecy of Daniel and John the Divine.”
Bill Cowsill no longer performs with the group, but has become an independent record producer.
The group, which has appeared throughout the country and on national television, has collected a number of anecdotes about their lives as performers.
During one engagement at a hotel nightclub, the management got uptight because all of the children with the exception of older brother Bill were underage. The situation was solved when Bill remained downstairs playing his drums alone on stage while music was piped in from the bathroom overhead where the remainder of the young Cowsills were stationed.
Recently the Cowsills moved from their 22-room mansion in Newport, R.I., to a sprawling Spanish-style house in Santa Monica, Calif., where they are now home-based.
Tickets for their WTSU appearance are priced at $2 for adults, $1 for non-WTSU students. Admission is free to WTSU student with ID cards, faculty and staff. Tickets will be available to the public one week prior to the performance in the Activities Center box office. Mail orders may be addressed to Special Programs, Activities Center, West Texas State University, Canyon, Texas, 79015.
