Providence, July 22. The Cowsills, who topped the record charts a few years ago, are bankrupt. William Cowsill, whose wife and up to six children, recorded for MGM and London Records, has filed for bankruptcy in U.S. District Court.

Claimed are $445,339 in debts to dozens of hotels, credit card companies, airlines, lawyers, recording studios and agents. Total listed assets of $4,973 include $78 in cash.

The single that did it for The Cowsills, who were heavily promoted by MGM, was "The Rain, The Park and Other Things." At the time, they wre being touted for a family sitcom. But the deal fell through, as "The Partridge Family" was created instead.
