As with many other record firms, MGM has been hard hit by the collapse of the monaural markee and resultant inventory problems. In addition, a number of its big sellers of past seasons - Connie Francis, Herman's Hermits, the Cowsills - have proved disap- pointing of late, while many in the music trade also feel that MGM has overextended itself in the sheer quantity of material released recently. "It's not that MGM lacks for hits, but it just turns out too much merchandise for its own good," noted one trade observer last week.
