Should American Forces Network program dirty, popular disk hits with a prefacing phrase such as "The following record is for mature ears only . . . ?"

That's the current controversy being played out here, with repercussions over the GI airwaves reverberating all the way to the Armed Forces Radio & TV Service in Los Angeles.

A couple of disk jockeys working for Armed Forces Radio Station SEN in Vicenza, Italy, tipped off the "banned records" controversary with a letter of complaint in the GI newspaper, Stars and Stripes.

"What do you mean Armed Forces Radio doesn't censor records?" they charged. Recent top-rated hits from the States, such as "Hair" by the Cowsills, "Mrs. Robinson" by Simon & Garfunkel, "Lady Madonna" by The Beatles and "Yummy, Yummy, Yummy" by the Ohio Express, were not obtained for the radio stations in Europe. Also censored they claimed were "Sweet Cherry Wine" by Tommy James & The Shondelles and "Cinnamon" by Dereck.
