Saxophonist Charles Lloyd moves into fresh, rock-oriented territory with this set largely by deemphasizing instrumental improvisation, and opting for solo and group vocals. Backup includes guitarist Dave Mason plus four Beach Boys and Billy Cowsill of The Cowsills. All but one of the eight tracks are Lloyd originals, and most are far above reigning pop quality. "Dear Dr. Ehret," "Memphis Belle" and "New Anthem/Warm Waters" showcase Lloyd's evocative melodic approach, and feature superb tenor background work by the composer. Lyrics are provocative in print but frequently unintelligible on disk. On balance, the material is of extraordinary high quality, although Lloyd's warbling proves only so-so.
