Hollywood - Lingerie (300 seats); Feb. 7, 1991; $6.50 cover. Promoted by Lingerie.
The year's most surprising comback might be that the Cowsills, the '60s family band that is perhaps best recalled as the prototype for the Partridge Family.
It's been 21 years since the Cowsills' last charted single, and the members had gone their separate, evidently acrimonious ways. Re-formed last year with four of the original siblings, the group has been breaking in new material across the country.
Judging from the enthusiastic reaction of the capacity crowd, there may be a '90s audience for the Cowsills.
The bulk of material performed during the hour-plus set was punchy pop tunes, without a trace of the bubblegum innocence of some of the group's early hits.
Susan Cowsill has become a powerful, somewhat raspy lead singer, while Bob Cowsill plays lead guitar and alternates with his sister on vocals. Drummer John and keyboardist Paul perform background vocals and occasional leads. Bobby Ginetti, not a family member, played bass guitar.
Set came to a triumphant close with group's version of "Going Down To Liverpool" - with Bangles Debbi and Vicki Peterson enthusiastically joining in on their old staple - and two of the Cowsills' biggest hits from the '60s: "The Rain, The Park And Other Things" and "Hair." - Todd
