The fortysomething (Donny) Osmond, who struggled for years to make the transition from giddy teen idol to mature singer recognized for his talent, is one of the lucky ones.
Others, such as the Cowsills and the DeFrancos, weren't so lucky.
The former was a family of singing brothers and their mom who became the inspiration for TV's "The Partridge Family."
When they refused to dump their mother to do the TV show, they were dropped by the movers and shakers and replaced with Shirley Knight (<- yes this article not the name wrong), David Cassidy, et al.
"We had 3 1/2 hits, if you want to count them," says Bob Cowsill these days, who noted that the family fell apart after their career was curtailed.
"We're the classic lost-all-the-money story," Bob Cowsills says.
Younger brother Barry Cowsill even attempted suicide a number of times.
On camera, a scruffy, long-haired Barry now reveals that jumping off a bridge was "the most liberating thing" he ever did.
He survived to become older but wiser.
