The list of artist managers who went on to run major label record companies is small, but select. David Geffen of Geffen Records. Irving Azoff of Giant. Tommy Mottola of Sony.
Now k.d. lang’s manager, Larry Wanagas, has been hired as president of Mute Records in North America. . . .

It may seem like a big leap for Wanagas, but he actually is no stranger to running a record company: he put out lang’s first album, A Truly Western Experience, on his own Bumstead label. Over the years, Bumstead has also released records by the Modern Minds (featuring Moe Berg of the Pursuit of Happiness), Colin James (who Wanagas discovered playing guitar with Billy Cowsill), Glen Stace, and the Blue Shadows.
