Note: John was part of this Jan and Dean tour of China - being the first rock group to ever play China.
SHANGHAI, China – The students demonstrating in Shanghai are strongly pro-West, worried about future jobs and pressing for a range of economic and political reforms under the banner of democracy.
. . .
The most unlikely spark for the demonstrations was a rock concert by the American singing duo Jan and Dean. One or two Jiaotong University students who climbed on the stage and began dancing reportedly were beaten by police.
“Students had nothing to do and were looking for action,” said one student. “The Jan and Dean incident and news of other demonstrations got them going.”
“The students strongly denied their demonstrations were reminiscent of the 1966-76 Cultural Revolution, when millions of students Red Guards took to the streets to carry out Mao Tse-tung’s leftist inquisition.
“This is a completely different spirit from the Cultural Revolution,” said one student.
