Jim Babjak, guitarist for The Smithereens, lost his wife to pancreatic cancer in 2016, so he was better prepared to consider the future of the New Jersey-based band when singer Pat DiNizio died in December 2017.

. . .

“It was just natural to go on,” Bajack says. “We started seeing an overwhelming response on Facebook – ‘Hey we hope you still continue to play. We still want to hear your music.’ Coincidentally, we had the memorial show for Pat. We had about 18 different singers come, and it was an incredible experience to hear toher people’s take and style on our songs. It was a breath of fresh air. It keeps it fresh for us and it keeps it fresh for the audience.”

Babjak says that Ted Leo and Susan Cowsill of the Cowsills also have both expressed interest in singing with the band.

None of the singers that have joined the band sounds like DiNizio at all, but Babjak says that wasn’t what they were looking for.
