The designated hitter was a good idea. The way the White Sox's short pants were a good idea. The way the AMC Gremlin was a good idea. The way John Davidson's nude layout in Playgirl magazine was a good idea. The way the Cowsills' Greatest Hits, Howard Cosell's variety show, streaking, CB radio and lapels as wide as the Montana sky were good ideas.

As usual, when the American League meets the National, the DH is a problem. It's the fifth wheel, the third shoe, the unwanted Cowsill.
