The Cowsills will appear at South Plains College in a concert sponsored by the Student Senate and the Student Activity Office on Saturday night, October 17. The Cowsills will perform two full hours of music that appeals to all ages and all types of music lovers. The Cowsills are a family of five children and their mother who made it big in the music world in the Spring of 1967 and since that time have had six songs that have become million sellers and five albums that have done likewise. Three of their songs made it to the very top of the Top 40 charts- THE RAIN, THE PARK AND EVERYTHING, INDIAN LAKE, and HAIR. More than a dozen of their songs have appeared on the Top 40 charts, and many other songs that were written by members of the Cowsills and performed by other artists have also reached the top.
Recently the Cowsills have devoted most of their time to concert appearances, fairs and rodeos and guest appearances on various television programs. Since August the group has appeared on Johnny Carson, Merv Griffin, Tom Jones Show, and the Ed Sullivan Show. In addition they have been touring with Johnny Cash and are scheduled to appear on his program at least twice during the next few months.
Meanwhile, The Cowsills have served as a model for a new situation comedy on ABC-TV called THE PARTRIDGE FAMILY. In fact, VARIETY magazine reported that The Cowsills were offered the situation comedy for themselves but turned it down due to other committments. However, ABC has reported that a show for the Cowsills is in the making for next year - either a comedy or a musical variety show.
The Cowsills are truly a family unit with six of them performing and their father, Bud Cowsill, serving as their manager and agent. They travel the country together, and all the kids who are still in school must attend classes with special tutors as they travel from one engagement to another. The Cowsills started out as a duo some twelve years ago, even before Susan, the youngest member was born. At that time brothers Bill and Bob performed together. As each of the boys grew older, they joined the original duo until there was a quartet; finally the boys invited their mother to join them, and only a little over a year ago they permitted Susan, who had just turned ten to join them.
Tickets are on sale in the Student Activity Office, at the various high schools in the area and from all members of the SPC Student Senate. Tickets will be available at the door on the night of the performance but will be a little higher. Pre-sale prices are $2.00 for students and $2.50 for adults. Children under school age and accompanied by a paying student or adult will be admitted free. The show s guaranteed to be fully entertaining and will be appealing to all ages regardless of musical interest and specialty.
Those wishing to meet The Cowsills and get autographs will be given this chance after the concert.
