Story is, Sly wrote this as a goof on The Cowsills, Spanky and Our Gang and other schlocksters. But when Larry Graham lets out that growl after the second chorus, the joke’s over – this is pure languorous soul. In America, the summer of ’69 was more gasoline-filled bottles and the National Guard than “those days of sodas and pretzels and beer” Nat Cole sang about way back in 1963. Sly is so convincing, us believers took that song into the Top 10.
