You never know what you'll stumble across when you take time to read the fine print. A glance at the credits to Red Kross' "Third Eye" album (Atlantic Records) yields the name Susan Cowsill, who is listed as a backup singer.

Yes, she's one of THOSE Cowsills. You know, the bubble-gum pop group. "The Rain, The Park & Other Things." "Indian Lake." "Hair."

"Hey, the Cowsills are back together again and they're great,' says Red Kross guitarist Jeffrey McDonald, speaking by telephone from Milwaukee. "Susan has this incredible sense of harmony, like Brian Wilson, although she's nowhere near as weird as he is. But they're not doing the oldies circuit or anything. They just opened a show for us in L.A., and they have a lot of new, really good songs."

Well, if Sonic Youth can make the late Karen Carpenter hip again, there's no reason Red Kross can't give an assist to Ms. Cowsill. Perhaps "Third Eye" will also give a boost to Shonen Knife, the subject of one of its songs.
