Proof you're never too old to rock

I’ve noticed that I really don’t see many kids on bikes on our streets compared to the day when my friends and I rode all over town. . . . it certainly is a different era than life in Nutley was in the 50s and 60s.

Way back in the days when my main means of transportation sported only two wheels, I longed for the time when I would get my driver’s license. It was only a few years away, but it seemed like forever before I’d be able to turn on an actual car radio instead of hooking my transistor radio over my handle bars and pretending it was real. Strains of Paul Revere and the Raiders, the Turtles, and the Cowsills would waft toward me as I maneuvered up and down the aprons of my neighbors’ driveways, picturing that I was entering and exiting Route 3 or 46 (imagine thinking that would be a fun thing to do). . . .

. . .

One of the performances I’ve been meaning to catch this summer was the “Happy Together Tour.” When I saw it was up for grabs as a prize, I took a chance and entered the contest. The show was on a night I was free, and I figured it would be no problem to find someone to go with me if I should win the tickets. I was rather surprised to receive an email informing me that I won, and that the admission also included a backstage Meet and Greet with the groups in the show. Having worked for a couple of Broadway producers, as well as at a televisions station, I don’t get star stuck, but I do enjoy meeting people whose work I admire, so it was fun saying hello and posing for a photo with Spencer Davis (spencer Davis Group), Mark Lindsay (of Paul Revere), Three Dog Night’s frontman, Chuck Negron, Bob, Paul and Susie Cowsill, Flo and Eddie of the Turtles, and Gary Puckett of Union Gap fame. Their show was a sampling of their grates hits, so everyone in the audience had a lovely time singing along. And although we’re all getting creaky and looing older than when we first shared songs like “Kicks,” “Indian Lake,” “Young Girl,” or “Happy Together,” these guys still have their musical chops. . . .
