Continental Drifters, Continental Drifters, Monkey Hill

As supergroups go, the Continental Drifters are a low-rent outfit. Peter Holsapple of the dBs, Vicki Peterson of the Bangles and Susan Cowsill of the Cowsills are joined by drummer Carlo Nuccio and guitarists Mark Walton and Robert Mache.

The Drifters' intent is to capture a Banklike sense of community with rich harmonies, divvied-up writing chores and lead vocals from all. "The wisdom of playing down Holsapple's sharp songwriting - he wrote only the cynical "Invisible Boyfriend" - is questionable. But "Continental Drifters" has its lived-in pleasures, Pat McLaughlin's nearly majestic "Highway of the Saints," foremost among them. Too many oldies - neither the Box Tops' "Soul Deep" nor Gram Parsons' "A Song for You" are necessary - but they're covered with such a warm spirit that makes it easy to forgive.
