The audience was about as enthusiastic with the show as Lucy is optimistic in a baseball game with Charlie Brown. But audience aside, a fast moving, professionally designed program barely describes the performance of the Cowsills last Saturday night in the Fieldhouse.
They displayed tremendous variety, versatility, and precision, playing a rainbow of styles, including pop music, folk, country western, hard rock and several of their smash hits.
John, the fourteen year old drummer, got the best reception with his realistic imitation of Johnny Cash. Also coming on strong was an excellent rendition of Honky Tonk Woman in typical Mick Jagger style.
Susan, the youngest at eleven, has an understandably shallow voice but exhibited a promising style. Her mother carried the folk banner throughout the show, introduced as “Mother’s golden oldie time,” and they were golden.
The second part of the performance was wrapped up with several of their originals to be released around February. The music got heavier and their light show, displaying vivid colors at increasing intervals, helped finally, though too late, to bring the audience more into the performance.
The audience, displaying a culturally inept attitude, came in with the feeling “Here I am, entertain me.” Enjoying life demands a positive attitude and so it goes with music, but we failed to hold up our end of the contract.
