During the program's first half, by the handsome family group, the Cowsills, popping flashbulbs marred almost every number, almost certainly partially blinded the performers, and made a barrier of broad shoulders for those sitting in the front rows.

Explained Delay

An announcement also explained the delay (of 30 mins). The Cowsills, flying from Los Angeles, were late out there, thereby missing their St. Louis connection. Our of St. Louis, in driving rain they finally got two charter planes at 7 p.m. and arrived breathless but bouncy only 30 minutes late on stage.

Eddy Arnold's musical director, Bill Walker, entertained the audience while the Cowsills were changing leading the orchestra in one of the program's most enjoyable segments. A fine director, Walker is a superb pianist as well. If you're wondering why the band sounded so great, wonder no more. That was A. Cobine's band, a top favorite in the Bloomington-Indianapolis area and probably Indiana's finest.

Endearing Troupe

An endearing family troupe of five brothers, mother Barbara and nine-year-old Suzie, the Cowsills are currently most popular for their folk rock in numbers such as "We Can Fly" and "The Rain, the Park and Other Things," which closed their half of the show.

For fans who find rock deafening at best, it was a pleasant surprise to hear their competence in other fields, as they presented a variety of both styles and songs. Particularly appealing to non-rock-hardened ears was their opening, by the two older boys with real guitars (as opposed to the wired thingamabobs), offering "Yesterday" and "They Call the Wind Maria."
