The Cowsills, whose self-contained musical enterprise proves that family singing can make the Top 10, perform in concert at 8:15 p.m. Friday in Eastern Montana College’s physical education building
Also appearing on the same program, sponsored by EMC TRIAD, will be five-member Canadian group, The Original Caste. Their first big hit was “Can’t Make It Anymore.”
The Cowsill family had its professional debut when the two eldest sons, Bill and Bob, stepped on stage, followed by Barry. The threesome hit pay dirt with the song, “Hair.”
Then came Dick, now in Vietnam, Paul, John, Susan and finally Mom. Presently, five of the seven children are singing with The Cowsills. Bob, guitarist and entertainer for nine years, became group leader when Bill quit to go on his own.
Barry, drummer and imitator of 10 voices, likes college appearances. “They don’t want to just see you, they want to hear you, too. College kids are the best audience. It’s funny, we used to play for about 10 people. Now we play for thousands.”
Although Bill and Bob used to write most of The Cowsills music, organist Paul expects “I’ll probably be getting into that.” He hopes someday to play pro sports, then become a physical education instructor. A junior in high school, he has attended 15 high schools since joining the family’s singing ranks.
The youngest and “the only” girl in the Cowsill family is Susan. She first appeared in the “We Can Fly” album. Susan has a poodle named Suebar, and likes to cook scrambled eggs, do the Yoga, knit, draw designs and watch television’s “Julia” and “Mod Squad.” She has seen “Camelot nine times.
