It's no wonder the New Orleans-based Continental Drifters get compared to the Band. Like the latter group, the Drifters - thanks to its multiple voices and songwriters - is much more than a frontman backed by in-the-shadows musicians. Nonetheless, there's real sonic unity in the Drifters' self-titled album debut, a rootsy, free-wheeling collection.
Another Drifters strength is the band's already well-known members, including former Bangle Vicki Peterson, Peter Holsapple of dB's fame and Susan Cowsill, the youngest member of the '60s family pop group, the Cowsills. The latter three - along with Carlo Nuccio, Mark Walton and Robert Mache - comprise a winning refreshingly unpretentious super group.
