A campground in the western section of Exeter could eventually blossom into a half-million dollar project, according to its developers, Mr. and Mrs. Robert Cowsill fo the Cowsill singing family.
Work at the 200 acre site north of Beach Pond near the Connecticut state line was halted April 23 when the Exeter town council was granted an injunction against the developers in Washington County Superior Court.
Playtime, the corporation the Cowsills established to build the campground had begun work without obtaining a campground permit from the town council.
At the council’s meeting Monday, Playtime was instructed to have its sewage disposal system approved by the state health Department.
Once this is obtained, the council told Playtime’s lawyer, George F. McDonald Jr. of Providence, a public hearing could be scheduled. The court injunction continues in effect.
Mr. McDonald described the campground as including an area for campers, a man-made pond, a ski run and a recreation area. Eventually the camp would operate all year.
The sewage system proposed consists of large underground retaining tanks.
The camp will have several buildings, including a pre-fabricated service building built by Crazy Horse Campgrounds, the franchiser of the campground.
Mr. McDonald said his client was not fully cognizant of the ordinance requirement regarding the permit, but felt the regulations were being followed.
