On Sunday and Monday night at the Nebraska State Fair many 4-H'ers "Doing their thing." The 4-H'ers "Doing their thing" were John and Barry Cowsill of California.
The Nebraska 4-H'ers greeted them with a warm welcome. The 4-H'ers received free passes from the Fair Board to the grandstand show on Sunday and Monday nights. The grandstand show included The Doodle Town Pipers and the Cowsills. Many 4-H'ers enjoyed these shows both nights.
John Cowsill was in 4-H work for over six years. He said he really liked it but had to give it up when the family moved and started a career. "I don't like science really but that's what I look," he said. "When I got it togeterher it always looked neat," he commented referring to his 4-H engineering projects. He was in a small club in Rhode Island. He said he thoguht it was a great way to get to do things you wouldn't ordinarily have the chance to do,
Barry, who is 16, was an active member for only about a month however because of having to move around the country, but he said he was on the mailing list for about a year though.
The Cowsills thought John's songs in Johnny Cash style were the most popular. John started his routine at Las Vegas not long ago. He said since he had the same initials as Johnny Cash (J.C.) he would walk out on the stage and say in a deep voice, "Hi, I'm Johnny C." and the crowd would, as in Lincoln, really react.
Bob, who is the arranger, composer and "boss" said he thought the Nebraska audience really liked the Johnny C. numbers the best. They all like country and western music and like doing it.
John, who is the talkative Cowsill, said they fit in, in Nebraska because when not on tour they have a ranch in California where they make their home. "We don't have many cattle or horses," said John, "just enough to be happy."
