Popular family recording group, "The Cowsills," will play a benefit for St. Jon Bosco School Halloween afternoon, at Our Lady of the Lake College.
The performance, to raise money for a dining hall at St. Jon Bosco, will be at 3 p.m. in Thiry Auditorium on the OLL campus. All tickets are $2.
The singing family consists of Mother Barbara and five of her seven children. They are Bob, 21; Paul, 19; Barry, 16; John, 14; and Susan, 11.
"The Cowsills" as a singing group began in the early 1960s when two of the boys began playing guitar for local groups in the home of Newport, Rhode Island. More and more of the brothers joined in, and in 1967 when a female voice was needed, the group turned to their mother.
A demonstration record, "The Rain, the Park and Other Things," was cut, "The Cowsills" were put under contract with MGM Records, and the record became their first million-seller. Susan Cowsill then joined the group, before the production of "Indian Lake," which topped the million mark.
Their biggest hit, "Hair" sold more than 2 million copies. In between these singles, six top-selling albums were recorded, and "The Cowsills" became familiar to viewers of numerous television shows.
