The Cowsills, a singing family whose recording of "Hair" has been a smash for weeks, "turned on" a near-capacity audience at the Circle Star theater in San Carlos last night.

It was their first personal appearance in Northern California.

Members of the audience ranged from small children to the elderly.

One lady, attending with a large group of elderly persons, said after the two-hour performance, "They are clever musicians, indeed!"

The Cowsills, from Newport, R.I., have come into national prominence in the past year or so, but have been cutting rcords for several years.

They have a wealth of original material, such as "Indian Lake," "We Can Fly," and "The Rain, The Park and Other Things ('Flower Girl')," and are dynamically eclectic as well.

Using songs from The Beatles and Peter, Paul and Mary, the Cowsills manage to capture the spirit and "sound" of the orginal artists, while adding their own ultra-sophisticated harmonies.

The Cowsills (that's the family's real name) include Bob, Paul, Barry, and John, their sister, Susan, and their mother, Barbara Cowsill. The oldest boy is 19 and Susan is "almost 10." Susan's powerful voice and outstanding stage presence are delightful show-stoppers.

Last night, they introduced an upcoming release called "The Prophecy" (of Daniel and John the Divine from the Bible's Book of Revelation), a version of the fall of Babylon, performed in a musical idiom combinine gospel and baroque forms.

The Cowsills will perform tonight at 8:30 p.m. and tomorrow at 5 and 8 p.m. at the Circle Star.

Bud Cowsill, the father is an ex-Navy career man. He has two other singing sons, Sgt. Dick Cowsill, USA, in Vietnam, and Bill Cowsill, recently married. That's a total of seven little Cowsills.
