The Smithereens are on a roll these days, earning the respect of critics and enjoying commercial success while playing a sound they describe as "AC/DC meets the Beatles."

. . .

The Smithereens' latest album, "Blow Up," earned a three-star rating in the Halloween issue of Rolling Stone. It features the Cowsills on a song Babjak wrote, "Now and Then."

Jim says the Smithereens heard the Cowsills sing before an audience of about 20 people. "They sang really well. They had some good, current material. They just can't get signed because of their name I guess," he says.

"I just went back and introduced myself and they turned out to be big fans of ours," he says.
