AUSTIN, TEXAS – Framed by the genuinely weird ‘60s continuum of Roky Erickson and Susan Cowsill, the seventh South By southwest (SxSW) Music and Media Conference flew by in a four-day blur of beer, barbecue and bands last weekend.

. . .

Cowsill, whose family band had hits with “Indian Lake” and “Hair” in the late ‘60s, is now a member of the Continental Drifters along with former db and R.E.M. sideman Peter Holsapple and Vicki Peterson of the Bangles.

The Continental Drifters were one of the buzz bands of the conference – a well-placed bomb at their Saturday evening showcase at Liberty Lunch would have resulted in job openings at rock magazines and newspapers across the country.

Unfortunately, their dull performance did not measure up to the advance billing as the group sounded like seven musicians who have spent too much time in Los Angeles.

There were, however, much brighter moments in the four nightly trips through the packed clubs where some 300 bands played.
