Smithereens: Band reflects its influences

But by far the most unexpected visitor to the Blow Up sessions was the late '60s pop group The Cowsills. Yes, the very same snappy singing family that hit big with "Hair" nearly 25 years ago. Smithereens guitarist Jim Babjack recruited the group to help with backing vocals on his lone composition for Blow Up, "Now and Then."

"Jim and I saw The Cowsills on a bill with (alternative rock favorites) Screaming Trees, if you can imagine that," Diken said. "Frankly we weren't prepared for what we saw. They didn't do any of the older stuff at all - just new songs that really bowled us over. Jim invited them in to sing on his song, they accepted and they were thoroughly professional."
