Cowsills

an estimated 5,000 visitors to the State Fair grandstand Sunday night enjoyed musical performances by the Cowsills and the Doodletown Pipers. The groups will be on hand again at 7:45 p.m. Monday.

Sunday night’s Grandstand show at the Nebraska State Fair had a little something to keep everyone happy.

. . .

The Cowsills, the stars of the show, seemed a little tired Friday night. Young Susan needed to give the audience a few more smiles; and the group lacked its usual zip.

With all of the hits that this famed family has made their mark with, one would think that they could come up with more than just “Hair.” It seemed that the crowd went away expecting more of the original Cowsill sounds.

It’s too Late

Perhaps the family is trying to change its image the same as recently changed its recording company. They group digs the sounds of Carole King, as most contemporary music lovers do, and Susan proved the maturation of her voice with “It’s Too Late.”

What the Cowsills are now doing perhaps reflects the importance of country-flavored music on the current music scene. Mother Barbara’s solo on “For the Good Times” and the group’s rendition of John Denver’s “Take Me Home, County Road” were good solid arrangements.

They gave it all they had on the Rolling Stone’s rocker “Brown Sugar” and followed it with a tune from “Jesus Christ Superstar.”

A Good Show

The Cowsills can provide a good show. Friday night was not quite up to par. Monday’s 7:45 p.m. show is bound to be first class.

This show’s personnel has the makings of a super star-studded evening for the whole family to enjoy! Sunday night’s crowd of 5,000 can’t be all wrong.
