Q. – Please tell me about the Cowsills. I saw them on the Johnny Cash show. Have they been on television before? H.M.

A. The Cowsills turned pro only a few years ago. Before that their entertainment was limited to hometown functions in Newport, R.I. Convinced the youngsters performed as well as many pro entertainers their father, William Cowsill borrowed more than $100,000 to start the group professionally. He was on the verge of losing the family home when the act finally clicked. The rest is history. The Cowsills have appeared on nearly every TV variety show, recorded hit songs and starred in their own special, “A Family Thing,” on NBC. The group includes Mother Barbara, 42; Bill, Jr., 22; Bob, 20; Paul, 17; Barry, 15; Johnny, 14, and Susie, 10. Bob’s twin, Dick, is the road manager and Papa Cowsill watches over all the other Cowsills.
