The latest disk from the Continental Drifters, one of America's best and most underrated bands, is a lot like the group's previous albums - pure, uncompromising and filled with passsion.
Going into their 10th year, the New Orleans-based crew is still powered by Peter Holsapple of the late great dB's, Vicki Peterson of the Bangles and Susan Cowsill, of the '60s hit-making family band the Cowsills.
Together they forge a wondrous sound, flexing their musical muscle on standouts here like the horn-powered pop of Holsapple's "Live on Love"; the rollicking, NRBQ-flavored "Too Little, Too Late"; and Cowsill's earthy "Cousin," which find her vocals roaring against slide guitars and driving keyboards.
The Drifters shift tempos effortlessly and frequently, slippin as easily through Peterson's accordion - and mandolin-backed country waltz "That Much a Fool" as they do through the trashy delight duet between Holsapple and Peterson "(Down by the) Great Mistake." It's another rock-sold effort from a band that deserves much wider recognition.
