In 1968, a group called the Cowsills recorded a catchy tune that went, "Indian Lake is the scene you should make ..."

OK, all you folks from my generation can start humming a few bars and the silly song won't go out of your head for the rest of the day. Sorry.

It wasn't about the Indian Lake in Logan County that so many fishing and boating folks around here frequent. If it existed at all, they were probably singing about some Indian Lake in California.

But Ohio's Indian Lake is the scene you should make if you are interested in catching saugeyes this spring.

"It's really been great so far," said Gene Marciniak, a bait dealer on the south side of the lake. "The saugeyes (and the crappies) have really been biting. If the weather holds up, it could be a great year."

Last year was, according to figures released this week by the Ohio Division of Wildlife. The statistics show the top lakes in Ohio for numbers of "Fish Ohio" catches during 2004. Indian Lake was No. 1 for all lakes in the state for trophy saugeyes, 21 inches or longer.
