The Beach Boys made the kind of music that sticks in your head, even after 50 years.
“Ba-ba-ba ba Barbara Ann.”
Or, “She’s not the little girl I once knew.”
And of course, “I wish they all could be California girls.”
Folks in the Wood River Valley will get to hear those tunes and more when The Beach Boys play at the Sun Valley Pavilion on Tuesday, Sept. 9.
The band members have changed over the years, but still with them for the Sun Valley performance is frontman Mike Love, one of the original five. Also with the group is Bruce Johnson — almost an original — who joined The Beach Boys in 1965.
The five original Beach Boys, as recognized by the Rock and Roll Hall Fame, which inducted the band in 1988, are Love, Brian Wilson, Dennis Wilson, Carl Wilson and Al Jardine.
Brian Wilson is still making music and has been touring with Jardine and his band. Dennis Wilson drowned in 1983 and Carl Wilson died of lung cancer in 1998.
David Marks, sometimes referred to as the “lost Beach Boy,” joined the group in 1962, playing off and on after that. He still works with band members, particularly Brian Wilson and Jardine, but is not on The Beach Boys roster that’s coming to Sun Valley.
That lineup, in addition to Love and Johnson, includes five other longtime professional musicians: drummer-singer John Cowsill, bassist-singer Randall Kirsch, keyboardist-singer Tim Bonhomme, and singer-guitarists Scott Totten and Jeffrey Foskett.
Cowsill and Kirsch are particularly well-known. Kirsch has played professionally since the 1960s and performed with Jan and Dean, Roger McGuinn, Stephen Bishop, The Cowsills and Toad the Wet Sprocket.
Cowsill sang with his siblings The Cowsills, a family group that grew to fame in the 1970s with such pop hits as “Indian Lake,” “Take a Letter Maria” and “The Rain, the Park and Other Things,” a song more commonly known as “I love the flower girl.”
With Love leading the team, and Johnson supporting with voice and keyboards, the seven guys can no doubt produce a lot of Beach Boy-like sounds, regardless of the in-and-out composition of the band.
Johnson, incidentally, when he joined the band in 1965, replaced Glen Campbell, who had filled in on tour for Brian Wilson when he was not well.
Expect some “fun, fun, fun” at the concert.
And lots of “good, good, good, good vibrations.”
