Off the Cuff, on the Horizon:
The King's Pub, which opened last May with a promise of varied entertainment, has booked the Cowsills for an Oct. 19 one-nighter. The six-member group will perform at 8 and 10 p.m. Ashley Alexander's regular Dixieland combo will play before, between and after the Cowsills' shows.
Owner Dan Sexton booked the group into his Seminary South Lounge on Oct 19 with the full knowledge that they had signed for two earlier dates in the area.
"But those appearances are before restrictive audiences - a country club and a military base," Sexton reasons. "My place is an open bar so I figure we can draw our crowd from the public at large."
The Cowsills who may be as well known for their TV milk commercials as for their LP's rather personify the oft-used label, "family entertainment."
The group's real-life beginnings probably furnished inspiration for television's fictional Partridge Family. The Cowsills sound started several years ago when the offspring of Bud and Barbara Cowsill began singing around the house; a slightly down-at-the-heels 22-room dwelling in Newport, R.I. Mama Barbara got in the act in 1967 when her four singing sons decided their group needed a female voice.
Baby sister Susan was too young at the time. But she's 11 now, and will be featured on bass guitar and vocals when the Cowsills play here.
Advance tickets for the one-nighter are $4.75 at Central Ticket Office in advance or at the door Oct 19.
