Barbara C. Cowsill, 56, leader of the 1960s singing group the Cowsills, died Jan. 31 in Tempe, Ariz., after a long illness. She formed the Cowsills with her daughter and five of her sons in the mid-'60s in their hometown of Middletown, R.I. Between 1967 and '70, the group scored three gold records and made the charts with such hits as The Rain, The Park and Other Things; We Can Fly; Indian Lake, In Need of a Friend and the title song from Hair. Both The Rain, The Park and Other Things and Hair reached No. 2 on the charts. The Cowsills had their own television special in 1968 and performed throughout the United States and Europe.
