Sometimes the Cowsills Forget the Usual Rock

What distinguishes the Cowsills from a dozen or two dozen other such rock or semi-rock groups? Nothing much, really.

There are the repetitive words, the sameness of rhythms, the conventional harmonies – except now and then the group tries an abrupt change of key or an unusual change of page.

These are notable in “One There Was A Time,” “On My Side,” “If You Can’t Have It – Knock It,” “Down On The Farm” and “Good Ol’ rock and Roll Song,” among a dozen on “On My Side” for London (PS 587). Barbara’s vocals are less impressive but more plaintive than those of John, Bob and Paul. The cover picture shows “my how they’ve grown” in the few years they’ve been operating.
