NEWPORT - This year's First Night Newport celebration will shake the city's arts, music and cultural scene from its winter sleep for a night of family-oriented fun. While there'll be plenty to do for kids, First Night isn't all balloon animals and face painting (by the way, balloon animals and face painting are in the Bowen's Wharf Tent pavilion from 5 to 7 p.m.) First Night organizers have summoned a very diverse mix of music and the arts, from indoor kite flying at Thompson Middle School on Broadway to a bluegrass band at Seamen's Church Institute, located at 18 Market Square.
From 5 to 9 p.m. on Dec. 31, 19 different venues in the heart of Newport will host a huge variety of cultural events to help Newporters and hundreds of visitors usher in the New Year.
There will be plenty of familiar faces performing, Barry Cowsill, James Montgomery, and Lois Vaughan to name a few, and several regional and national acts to help spice it up.
First Night offers up all kinds of music
NEWPORT - Decisions, decisions. If you work it just right, you should be able to stop in and listen to nine different kinds of music on First Night. The line-up stretches from oldies but goodies (Barry Cowsill) to brand new (teen sensation Brandon Lentz), from the blues (Paul Geremia) to classical music (Marty Boger, soprano).
