SHANGHAI, China – The students demonstrating in Shanghai appeared to be strongly pro-West, were worried about future jobs and were pressing for a range of economic and political reforms under the banner of democracy.

. . .

The most unlikely spark for the demonstrations was a rock concert by the U.S. singing duo Jan and Dean. One or two Jiaotong University students who climbed on the stage and began dancing reportedly were beaten by police.

“Students had nothing to do and were looking for action,” said one student. “The Jan and Dean incident and news of other demonstrations got them going.”
