. . .

Another feature of the fair this year will be The Cowsills, one of the most popular family entertainment groups in the country today. They will present concerts at 7 p.m. and 9 p.m. on Thursday, Aug 13 at the fair.

Ed Jukes, a member of the executive board of the Wabash Valley Fair Association, Inc., is playing a key role in getting things ready for the performances of the Cowsills.

He reports there will be 1,100 choice seats on the track at the Fairgrounds for each performance, plus hundreds of grandstand seats.

The seats on the track should give the audience a real close-up view of the Cowsills in Concert,” Jukes said. “This is the first time we’ve set up seats that close to the stage, but we think it will be tremendous for the audience. A plastic cover will be placed on the track and the chairs will be placed on the cover.

He also noted that this is the first time in several years that a top name act has performed at the Vigo County Fair. The Wabash Valley Fair Association Inc., feels that the Cowsills will fill the bill perfectly for Wabash Valley residents who want to attend the shows as a family.

“The Cowsills are favorites of grandparents, parents and their children,” Jukes said. “It should be a memorable evening for everyone who attends one of their performances.”

Several Big Hits.

The Cowsills have come up with several big hits in recent years. Many recall their first big record, “The Rain, The Park and Other Things.” That triggered a promotional tour throughout the country, which was set up by MGM.

Then came the big test. Everyone asked if they could follow-up with another hit record equally indicative fo the true talent. They did. It was called “We Can Fly.” Many Wabash Valley residents know that one well.

Their hit records brought that a contract with Ed Sullivan for 10 guest shows. They also received requests to make movies, discussed a possible TV series, and hooked onto a lucrative merchandising program.

The father of the Cowsills is Bud, who is general manager and sound man. The Cowsills have their own sound system, presided over by Bud, who sets the levels and makes sure everything is working before a performance.

“Mom” is Barbara Cowsill who stands in the wings and helps boost all her kids as they perform in the act.

The first MGM album of the Cowsills was entitled “The Cowsills.”

In 1968 they took their first trip to Europe. When they returned, their second album was released entitled “We Can Fly.” And everything has been flying for them ever since.
