Twenty years ago, Billy Cowsill and Gary Comeau were coming to our town and packing places like the Riv Rock Room as members of Blue Northern, Vancouver’s hottest country-rock band.
The six-piece band hand banged out successive hits like Can’t Make No Sense, Too Late To Turn Back and You’re Not The Same Girl and could wow crows with high-energy performances topped by great lead vocal and harmony performances.
Today, Comeau and Cowsill are still making quality music, although not together, and both are in town for shows this weekend.
. . .
For Comeau, one of the highlights of the entire Blue Northern experience was working with Billy Cowsill.
“Billy taught me a lot about music, conviction, soul, honesty and feel, and about The Beatles and Rolling Stones, individuality and finding the groove,” says Comeau, who also guested on a Blue Shadows album when Cowsill was in that band.
Hot seller
Cowsill is still mining those early Beatles and Stones catalogues with The Co-Dependents – ad with a great deal of success.
The group’s disc, Live Recording Event, has been the hottest selling indie roots disc in Alberta since its release last Christmas. With bandmates Steve Pineo, Ross Watson and Tim Leacock, The Co-D’s had no problem selling out Festival Place the last time they breezed through our neighborhood.
Tonight the Calgary-based band will be tearing through its wonderful songbook, which includes a few originals and a couple of Blue Shadows numbers, in a venue that features a large dance floor.
Tin Pan Alley is that venue, and it’s located at 48th Avenue on Calgary Trail. Tickets are $15 and the band kicks into instant overdrive at 9:30 p.m. and it is a one night only affair.
