The hottest sounds heard around town this week have been behind closed doors over at Beta Sounds, where Miles Wilkinson and the Codependants have been whittling away at the stockpile of tunes they recorded over a three-night stand last week in Calgary.

Just in case you don’t think you’re familiar with this troupe, the quartet is yet another configuration of players who have lent their talents to the Burners, Beautiful Joe, National Dust, Trainwreck, and The Blue Shadows. Specifically we’re looking at and more importantly listening to, Billy Cowsill, Tim Leacock, Ross Watson and Steve Pineo.

Producer Wilkinson flew up from Nashville to oversee the live taping at the Mecca Diner, which was jam packed for all three shows. Since then, he and the boys, along with executive producer Neil McGonigill, have trimmed the selections down to 14 hot numbers. Most find Cowsill’s amazing pipes up front, biting off big chunks of classic rock ‘n’ roll numbers from the ‘50s and ‘60s as only he can.

Among the sizzlers are Honey Don’t (Carl Perkins), Anna (Arthur Alexander/the Beatles, Secret Agent Man (Johnny Rivers) and Out of Time (Rolling Stones).

Originals include a haunting take of Cowsill’s Vagabond, which has been in his repertoire since the days of Blue Northern, as well as Pineo’s Mississippi Saxophone.

“It happened that Jeth Weinrich was around so he volunteered to shoot the shows in his own unique fashion,”McGonigill said. Weinrich is an award-winning filmmaker who has directed numerous music videos for the likes of Jann Arden and 54-40.

“Jeth likes what he got so much that he thinks we may have the core for a 30-minute documentary,” added McGonigill.

If all goes according to plan, the disc will be out by mid-summer, and Cowsill and buddies will at long last be able to appease all those folks who for so long have been begging for such a disc. Believe me, there is no shortage of fans out there.
