Although Stewart MacDougall and Billy Cowsill began co-writing songs a decade ago, the veteran performers have yet to share a stage, at least officially.

That ends tonight as the Uptown Folk Club presents the two gifted musicians in what should be a packed Woodcroft Hall.

“It was Larry Wanagas who got Billy and I together to write just over 10 years ago,” MacDougall says of his friend. Wanagas was the longtime manager of k.d. lang and today looks after the business affairs of Big Sugar and Susan Aglukark.

“Since then, we’ve written over a dozen tunes together. Stubborn Case appeared on my last album Heresay and that song was actually pitched to Johnny Paycheck a few years ago, but the sessions were cancelled when he became ill.”

MacDougall also enlisted Cowsill to add his deadly accurate backup vocals on the songs Crossing Alone on the same album.

Cowsill did come out of the audience and sit in with MacDougall for a set last year at the Karma Local Arts House, which is Calgary’s favorite acoustic music showcase room. The reaction was more than positive, but for this date the two have been rehearsing diligently, and Cowsill will be armed with his acoustic guitars and harmonica.

“We’re doing two sets and are including some material from records Billy cut with The Blue Shadows like A Thousand Times, Think On It and Vagabond. We’ll also do a number of country covers, Hank Williams is in the list, and at least six Marty Robbins songs. We’re both Marty freaks.”

Showtime is 8 p.m.; tickets are $1 in advance at Myhre’s Music and $12 at the door. Woodcroft Hall is located at 13915 115th Ave.
