Remembering Cowsills

You’ve all heard plenty of rags-to-riches stories, but too many times the story keeps right on going until it’s riches-to-rags again. Take the Cowsills. Remember them? Back in 1967, they burst upon the public with “The Rain, the Park and Other Things,” which sold a million single records. Managed by retired Navy man William Cowsill, the papa, the group was made up of Barbara Cowsill (that’s their real name, by the way) and kids William, Robert, Paul, Barry, John and Susan, ranging in age from 20 (William) to 9 (Susan). They belted out “We Can Fly” and “Indian lake” and soon moved into a 23-room mansion and played dates around the world, but . . . their style, sometimes called “Bubble Gum Rock,” fell from popularity. They went bankrupt two years ago. Still – they’re trying again. Maybe they can fly again?
