And passing away, Jan. 31, after a lengthy illness, was Barbara Cowsill, who earned a footnote in pop music history by becoming the only mother (that I can think of, anyway) to lead her own family singing group into the top ten. The group, the Cowsills, had three bubble gum-type hits in the late 1960s, including "The Rain, the Park and Other Things," which hit number two in 1967; "Indian Lake," which hit number 10 in 1968; and "Hair," which also hit number two in 1969. Mrs. Cowsill was 58.
